The Ways Paradigm: A Transtheoretical Model for Integrating Spirituality Into
Counseling
breaks down the different ways to effectively and appropriately integrate and teach
counseling theory that includes spirituality and religion (Deal, Fox, & Stewart-Sicking 2014).
There has been an increase on the emphasis in religion and spirituality in counseling, based on
research however it has not translated into practice and this article goes over ways on how to do
that (Deal, Fox, & Stewart-Sicking 2014). The theory is called The Ways Paradigm, which is
divided into three groups: Ways of Understanding, Ways of Being, and Ways of Intervening
(Deal, Fox, & Stewart-Sicking 2014).
The paradigm is a way to help counselors learn an
appropriate way to integrate religion and spirituality into their practice, to best suit the client.
With the three dimensions, counselors can take most theories and adapt it with religion and
spirituality (Deal, Fox, & Stewart-Sicking 2014). The article also discusses The Implications,
Implications for Counselor Education, Implications for Research, and Implications for Practice.
These three implications are to help budding counselors further integrate religion and spirituality
into psychotherapy with new perspectives (Deal, Fox, & Stewart-Sicking 2014).
Articles like this really make me sit and think about the influence of religion. As I have
mentioned in discussion boards and responses, I am currently working through my relationship
with religion. I was raised Catholic and was a decently active member with my family.
However, around seventh grade cracks started to form, and I was a Catholic skeptic in the
making. The contradictions felt plentiful, and I was just so confused all the time, it wasn’t black
and white and it felt like there wasn’t room for discussions or questions, it was just how it was.
I’m still in the same boat as I was nearly 15 years ago. I consider myself agnostic,
however at times I do like the comfort and tradition that church can provide. And then there are
times like today when I get a news alert on my phone that 150 priests are tied to 600 abused
