1. "Fountain" is considered a divisive work of art. Why? The main source of contention around "Fountain" is its stark rejection of conventional artistic norms. By exhibiting a mass-produced urinal as a piece of art, Duchamp questioned accepted ideas about originality and the very nature of art. In conclusion, "Fountain" continues to stir controversy because it forces viewers to reevaluate the limits of creativity and the significance of creative purpose in influencing how we perceive the world. 2. What was Duchamp's goal in the making of art? Marcel Duchamp aimed at challenging accepted notions of creation, art, and the artist's function. He aimed to challenge accepted norms and traditions in order to expand the parameters of creative expression. Duchamp frequently highlighted the conceptual elements of art because he felt that ideas had more force than conventional craftsmanship or beauty. Duchamp’s expectations about what art inspires inquiry and debate with pieces like "Fountain". His intention was to alter our perception and comprehension of creative activity by engaging with the theoretical foundations of art, in addition to producing aesthetically pleasing products. 3. It is a ready made and the most paralyzing and destructive thing that has ever originated. The genre of Dada art is about embracing absurdity, randomness, and chaos as a way to critique society and the established art world. It encompasses a wide range of artistic forms, including collage, assemblage, performance, poetry, and more. 5. Discuss some of Elsa von Fretag-Loringhoven's idiosyncrasies. Both William Carlos and Djuna Barnes had a lot of love for her. Through her baroness had her eyes on one lover and when she was introduced to Marcel Duchamp she became infatuated with him. In a spontaneous art piece, she stripped down and rubbed her naked body with a newspaper article. Also, she wrote a poem saying the line “I love you like Hell, Marcel.” This says that her behavior is very bold and Duchamp later declined her sexual advances and did his best to keep their relationship at a professional level. The question arises if it was Duchamp/Freytag Loringhoven collaborating to create “Fountain.” 7. Who is proposed as a different author/creator of "Fountain?" What evidence is there? One of the theories creating "Fountain" suggests that it was not Marcel Duchamp who created the iconic artwork, but rather Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. The evidence is that her ongoing obsession with corporeal humor with a strong interest in in bodily fluids. Gammel states in the book that the style and aesthetic of "Fountain" align closely with Elsa's artistic sensibilities, as seen in her other works and found object sculptures. Also, Duchamp could have collaborated with or been influenced by Elsa in the creation of the artwork.
