EDU276 LESSON 9 ASSIGNMENT 1. Participation Assignment: A new student has arrived in your classroom. Although it's only the student's first day in your room, you get the feeling that she "is going to be a handful." She seems disinterested in what you have to say, and has already disrupted surrounding students by visiting. What aspects of Assertive Discipline could you utilize to assist with promoting a feeling of trust with this student? Do you think it would benefit the student if you spent some one-on-one time with her? What types of questions would you ask, what type of information might you share? What might be a strategy you could use to increase the trust and, therefore, support between this student's family and yourself? Summarize your ideas in a short narrative. Some aspects of discipline that I can use with this student to promote a feeling of trust is to treat her the same as all my other students, carefully listen to her and make sure she feels heard and learn about her inters. These will all help create trust with the student because she will see that I am a fair, level-headed teacher who cares about her. I definitely think that this new student would benefit by spending one-on-one time with her. As a new student, she probably feels misunderstood, left out and somewhat alone and it is my responsibility as her teacher to make her feel welcomed and included through one-on-one time together. I would ask her things such as “what is your favorite thing to learn about?” and “what was your favorite thing about your last school?”. These kinds of questions will let her express herself and give me information on how she learns best. I would share with her some of my student’s favorite things to learn and some of my expectations that I have for my class so she feels integrated in how I run things. One way to gain trust with the student’s family is to communicate regularly with them. Specifically, positive comments about their child. This will help the parents worry less and trust that I am observing their child and making sure she is on the right track.
