Option 3. William Scott follows how a new practice of “lifestyle marketing” transformed the clothing habits of American men. This marketing “associated California casual apparel with youth, celebrity, leisure, and heterosexuality” and helped spread this new casual men’s clothing aesthetic far beyond California (170). Can you think of another clothing item or style that has “traveled” from its original place, region, or culture of origin to become widely adopted in other places, regions or cultures? Find an image representing this clothing item or clothing style and analyze your image, making concrete connections with one or more of the readings. What is this style or clothing item seen as representing or meaning to the people who adopt it? Has it been marketed or promoted? How? The Spread Of The Nose Ring The nose ring originated in South Asia and the Middle East and had roots in Ayurvedic practices as early as the 1st century. Listed in these Ayurvedic texts it was stated that a piercing in the left nostril could help alleviate pain for both childbirth and menstruation, which makes it a very traditionally feminine practice. It was, and is to this day, a symbol of womanhood. It is usually pierced into the woman’s nose at around the age of 16, which was the age girls typically got married; this is speculated to have connections to the Goddess Parvati, the goddess of marriage and fertility, who is pictured to wear a nose ring. While the original meaning and significance of the nose ring has remained in these areas, with its spread across the world its connotation has changed, comparable to the shift in stiletto heels being a symbol of the archetypal 50’s housewife to the sexually liberated woman as said by Wright in “Objectifying Gender: the stiletto heel” . In the 1960’s and 70’s, with the influx of travel to India due to the popularization of Indian culture in the Hippie Movement, nose rings were one of the many things brought back with the largely White American and British population that visited. Their meaning shifted from the traditional practice it was to a progressive symbol of rebellion for the hippies; a body modification previously unheard of. Other subcultures began to adopt this piercing, with the punk culture of the 70’s and 80’s adorning themselves with a variety of piercings; the nose being one of them. Both the Hippie Movement and the Punk Movement are known for their youthful rebellion and anti-establishment attitudes, which attached itself to the nose ring. Today, with the cultural awareness that is owned by much of the Western public as a result of social media and an increase in South Asian immigrants, it is heavy with both connotations largely depending on the wearer; many White-American teens continue to use the nose piercing as a tool for rebellion or self exploration, whereas many South Asian and Middle Eastern-American teens may use it as a tool to reconnect with their cultural roots.
