Art Appreciation Week 4 Comprehension Questions Instructions : After reviewing this week's resources, answer the following questions. 1) In the example of Grunewald's Isenheim Altarpiece, Christ's body is larger than any other figure. Why did the artist do this? What effect does it have on the piece as a whole? How might this technique be employed in other artworks? Making Christ’s body larger than any other figures is meant to show emphasis, it is the focal point. There is a lot going on in the piece, it carries a lot of visual weight so by making Christ’s body bigger our eyes are immediately drawn to it even if it is slightly off-center. It could also be that he is depicted larger than anyone else to add dramatics; this is an already emotional piece so it could further evoke emotion. This can be used in other work in the same way; draw your attention to a specific area/subject, make it larger so that is your focus, emphasizing scale to create a more emotional response. Woman from Willendorf , c. 25,000 BCE. Limestone, 4.4" (11.1 cm). Naturhistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria. 2) What does the proportion of Woman from Willendorf (above) tell you about its possible function? The proportions of the figure could represent fertility as the woman’s belly and breasts are larger than the rest of it as they typically are during pregnancy. Since it is small scale we can assume it was for a more personal use and not necessarily for display. 1
3) In many contexts, Woman from Willendorf is referred to as Venus of Willendorf . How does this change of title impact your perception of the object? Venus is the goddess associated with love and fertility; so I would not say this change in title would impact my perception of the object. It adds to the view by showing that this time in a woman’s life is loved and significant, the woman capable of bringing life into the world is valued just like Venus. Wes Wilson, Concert poster for Otis Rush & His Chicago Blues Band, Grateful Dead, and Canned Heat Blues Band, February 24-26, Fillmore Auditorium. 1967. Color offset lithograph, 22” x 13 11/16”. De Young Legion of Honor, Fine ARts Museum of San Francisco, California. 4) Describe how Wes Wilson achieved balance in his concert poster (above). Wilson achieved balance in his use of colors and the way the font sways with the image. The colors work well together, none of them really grab more attention than the others so that you wont focus solely on one name. He uses negative space to keep it from looking too cluttered. 2
