Module 7: Film Score Assignment You will be watching the 1956 science-fiction film Forbidden Planet, one of the most influential films of the science-fiction-fantasy film genre. Remarkable for its electronic music score, Forbidden Planet would also influence mid-20 th Century and 21 st Century composers. Please answer the following questions and include specific examples from the film where appropriate (you can use the timer at the bottom of the screen to cite the location). 1. What kind of “atmosphere” is created by the film score during the opening credits? What did the composers do to create that atmosphere? The atmosphere created is very eerie with no type of rhythm. It seems they did electronic notes that were off key, sounding almost like an alarm with a slow tempo. It was definitely not from an orchestra. 2. Are there any examples of “source music” in the film? Where does it occur? At time 51:41 Dr. Morbius begins playing a recording from Krell musicians that was over half a million years old. The recording still plays through viewing remaining artifacts on the plant. 3. Provide one example in which the film score expresses: a. Time and place: Dr. Morbius playing the musical recording by the Krell. b. Association with a particular character: At 45:47 the music gets more softer and lighter as Skipper talks with Altaira when she exits the pond. c. Sound effects: When the commander shoots the tiger with his blaster.
Module 7: Film Score Assignment d. Dramatic action: At 1 hr and 34 min. dramatic electronic music is played while Dr. Morbius’s “other self” melts the door. 4. What is an example of a film score or video game soundtrack that might have been influenced by the score to Forbidden Planet ? While researching I discovered a video game called Mass Effect which sounds similar to the movie's soundtrack. 5. Do you think this film score is effective? Why, or why not? I think film score is effective. It adds more depth and ambience in the movie. It also helps the film become more unique with its own film score. I haven’t heard any other movie using a soundtrack as similar to Forbidden Planet, but it is more common in video games.
