TECH 103 Page 1 of 4 © JDD TECH 103 Digital fundamentals Lab Group Lab 2 Fundamental gates Student name Student number Marks Introduction In your first practical class you will learn about the three most important digital gates. You will also get some basic skills on how to conduct experiments with electronic components using the two I/O boards we talked about a week ago. You will learn about wiring techniques including: Use of red and black wiring for DC supply connections Marking the pin numbers on the schematic before wiring the circuit Arrangement of wiring so an IC can be changed easily Careful observation of supply polarity before powering up Turning power off before making circuit changes Procedure 1. The AND gate We will start with the 74LS08 part, a set of four AND gates in the same package. Fig. 1 shows the circuit you have to construct. Identify pins print the TTL Pin Configurations sheet posted on Blackboard. Select from the sheet one of the four gates inside the package and write down its pin numbers in the boxes of the circuit shown at the left side of Fig. 1. 2. Boolean equation write down the Boolean equation of the circuit in the space provided in the middle of Fig. 1.
TECH 103 Page 2 of 4 © JDD 3. Assemble components take a look on Fig. 4 of the lab we did last week orient the breadboard in such a way that the red line is on the top . Now place the IC package somewhere in the middle of the breadboard so that the two rows of the IC pins straddle the slot at the centre of the board. Make sure the notch of the IC is at the left. Then plug the switch board to the left of the IC; plug the LED board to the right of the IC. 4. Connect power - using a piece of #22 or #24 gauge wire, connect the tree pieces to the power rails of the breadboard as explained in the previous lab. Then add two leads between the power rails and the power supply (don’t forget: red colour for the + terminal and black colour for the terminal). Do not turn on the power supply yet. 5. Connect inputs and outputs using jumper wires and watching the pin numbers you defined in step 1, connect two channels of the switch board to the inputs of the IC and one channel of the LED board to the output of the IC. 6. Ask the teacher to review your connections if everything is ok, the teacher will turn on the power supply and will check circuit operation. Then you will continue on your own. 7. Experiment using the switches and the LED, fill the truth table in Fig. 1. 8. Wrap up - turn off the power supply and remove the chip from the breadboard. 2. The OR gate We will do the same experiments using the 74LS32 part. It combines four OR gates in one package. Plug the chip in the breadboard and follow the same eight steps as with AND gate experiments. Don’t forget to call the teacher when ready with connections. Place all results in Fig. 2 . It combines six NOT gates in one package. Plug the chip in the breadboard and follow the same steps as with AND gate and OR gate experiments. Call the teacher when ready with connections. Place all results in Fig. 3 .
