Lifespan DIET3050 - Choose Your Foods Lists Project: In-class practice- 1500 Calories
Food Lists are used to calculate an eating plan for anyone
requiring a certain calorie level and a specified amount: CHO, Pro, Fat. For people with diabetes, CHO is most important.
Meal Plans are based on a person’s eating habits with improvements as needed.
The Food Choice List System is an efficient way to identify lists food choices that contain approximately the same calories, CHO, protein, and fat. Flexible meal plans are the goal.
Calculate a 1500 calorie diet using the following directions. Keep MyPlate food groups in mind to create a nutritionally balanced diet. Include 2 servings milk or equivalent and a variety of fruits, vegs, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats.
1.
Calculate the desired calorie levels for the CHO, protein, and fat.
CHO calories = 1500 × 45% = 675 cals from CHO
Protein Calories = 1500 × 20% = 300
cals from Protein
Fat calories = 1500 × 35% = 525
cals from Fat
2.
Divide the calorie level for each nutrient by the appropriate factor to determine the
number of grams for each macronutrient
Divide CHO calories by 4
to = grams of CHO: 169
g CHO
Divide Protein calories by 4
to = grams of Protein: 75
g Protein
Divide Fat calories by 9
to = grams of Fat: 58
g Fat
3. Divide total grams of CHO (from 2, above) by 15 to obtain the number of CHO “Choices”. This number of choices will be distributed among these
CHO-containing lists: a) Starches, b) Fruits, c) Milk and d) Veg, e) Sweets. 4

: Using the number of grams for each nutrient
you can begin to establish the number of choices
from each Food List.
Work on separate page before typing onto worksheet as you calculate numbers of “Choices”.
a. Begin with CHO g. (from # 2 above) to determine the number of CHO Choices @ 15 grams each. 169 grams from CHO/15 = 11

b. Transfer CHO Choices to the table and distribute
them among the food groups. Use some starch, some fruit, some milk, vegs and other CHOs to build a balanced and varied diet. Begin with 2 cups milk for adults and 3-4 cups, depending on calories, for pregnant or lactating women and children/teens). a.
Fill in ONLY
the top portion of the table on the table with the grams of CHO, protein, and fat for the number of choices for each CHO Choice Food Group. Notice that you have used some protein and fat from the starch, veg. and milk choices
5. Subtotal

: Now determine the number of protein choices you can use. b.
Establish how many grams
of protein remain
for use: subtract the total
amount of protein you have used up from the CHO-based choices from the total protein grams calculated in step 2, above.

Divide this number by 7
(grams protein per protein choice). (letter a. above) 38g pro / 7 = 5 pro choices. Distribute
these among the protein choices on the table.
d.
Fill in grams protein and fat used by the protein choices on the table.
7. Subtotal
all grams CHO, protein, and fat on worksheet table. Add up all CHO, protein, and fat grams from carbohydrate and protein choices you have added to the worksheet.
8. FAT
: Now determine the number of fat choices available.
a.
Establish the number of total fat grams
used up so far and subtract
this number from the total grams fat calculated for this diet in step 2.
58 total g of fat. – 25 total g fat from CHO & pro. = 33 g fat remaining
Divide remaining number of fat grams by 5
(the grams of fat in one choice). 33 g fat remaining (letter a. above) / 5 = 7 fat choices.

Fill in grams
of fat used by the fat choices on the table on the worksheet.

9. Total
all of the grams
of CHO, protein, and fat listed on the worksheet table.

Add calories for any alcohol
only after
you have calculated the percentages. (Note: For this situation, no
alcohol would be added as the client is pregnant.)

. Final adjustment
: Determine whether to add/subtract choices, by comparing total grams of CHO, protein, and fat to the gram goal for these nutrients. This requires a decision on how to use any remaining
g. of CHO, protein, or fat. For example, there may be CHO grams remaining. If so, you could add more CHO choices to come closer to the CHO goal. However, you should note that a fruit choice includes no protein or fat, whereas in adding a starch, you will need to calculate some protein as well as CHO. 11b

Remember: 3 Veg. choices = 1 CH0 choice. You will enter either 3, 6 or 9 veg choices in chart
