All four of my sources, primary and secondary, contain different narratives; however, two of them have more relation to a single narrative than a difference. In Martin Duberman’s excerpt from Stonewall, he gives the narrative to the victims/ eye-witnesses of the Stonewall Raid. He lets them tell the events of Stonewall and how it has affected the ‘G ay Rights movement. In The New York Times article, the narrative is given to an outsider who is observing the events and actions done by the police. In Varga, Beck, and Thorton’s pi ece, they give the narrative of influence. In doing so, Varga, Beck, and Thorton discuss the future influence on generations when recounting the events of Stonewall- shedding light on social/human rights of the time and
their impact. Lastly, Stein’s articl e gives the narrative to the impact of Stonewall- discussing why and what happened, while including political excerpts from the time. By doing this, he portrays the political agenda of the time period and why history experts believe the Stonewall Rebellion happened. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event. Duberman’s excerpt from Stonewall has shed a spotlight on eye -witnesses of the events that took place. By doing so, he has provided an inside look as to what really happened, what led to the event, and what happened after. In my opinion, his narrative of Stonewall has impacted our understanding today. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. The narrative presented in Duberman’s piece takes about the impact on the gay rights movement and LGBTQ+ community members. He gives the readers a first-hand look into what happened, what led to the ‘uprising’, and why Stonewall was differen t than any of the other rebellions/riots of the time.
