Case study: A concerned neighbor has referred Grafton, a seventy-seven-year-old male, to the Horseradish County Elderly Protective Services Unit. Grafton lives on his rundown family farm on the outskirts of the rural Midwestern county. The neighbor reports that twice, he has found Grafton lying helplessly on the ground because he had fallen while walking out to get his mail. Both times, the neighbor practically had to carry Grafton back into the house. Grafton has rheumatoid arthritis, which makes it very difficult to walk even with his two canes. Additionally, his eyesight is very poor. The neighbor has also raised questions about Grafton’s ability to shop and cook for himself. 1. Identify and describe the perspectives you would include as you assess the “client-in-situation.” 2. What diversity issues might be involved with Grafton and what complexities might they raise? 3. Suppose you were to visit Grafton in his home. How could you use a home visit in assessment?
