Find information (google) on the book bans that are either currently in effect or recently were proposed in that state. If there are multiple cities/school districts with book bans on the table, choose ONE to focus on. As of February 2022, the public schools of Polk county, Florida have removed and placed under review a total of 16 books to be banned. 3. Pay attention to what books or kinds of books are being banned. Identify any characteristics of the books that are being banned (in that particular location). From The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrisson to I am Jazz by Jazz Jennings, the topics vary. The majority of banned books are LGBTQIA+ oriented. Some educate about racism and privilege or even the Afghan war. Others talk about school shooting or prostitution. 4. Considering the language in the proposed ban(s), identify how the three dimensions of power ( AD, p. 10) are being used to push for these book bans. Formal decision making can be observed through removing the books and the strict review of said literature by the district. Mobilization of bias is noted when it comes to why the books were removed. The county received a complaint from a group (County Citizens Defending Freedom) , stating that the books were harmful to minors because they conflicted with their values. This group presented the ban proposition with a will to be sided with, as their arguments are obviously biased. Preference shaping is also present as the county banning such literature would be choosing to withhold available information to further influence the kids to follow said values out of ignorance.
5. Given the justifications/arguments that are being presented on behalf of the proposed (or implemented) bans, identify any of the fallacies present in that argument ( AD, p. 26). The argument presented is that the books are harmful to minors because they go against the values of the County Citizens Defending Freedom (CCDF). The appeal to majority fallacy is at play as the argument relies on the popularity of an opinion, which cannot make said argument true. The black/white fallacy is also present as the argument leaves a sense of having only two options and possibly being seen as being at fault for not agreeing with the argument. 6. Provide a broad overview of your findings/conclusions. Overall, we can conclude that the CCDF is a group of adults who aren’t in support of the LGBTQIA+. They also seem to not want children to be aware of America’s tortuous past, from slavery to war. While i could agree with the fact that school shooting stories could trigger/scare students, it could also help them be aware of the gravity of things or support stricter gun laws, which i’m sure the CCDF probably isn’t in favour of.
