Stephanie Vega April 21 st , 2024 Dr. Neimeyer Behavioral Addictions Reflection 14 – Sabra: Welcome to My World of Social Media 1) How would you characterize Sabra's use of her cell phone and social media. For example, how central does it seem to be in her daily life and/or identity? - Sabra’s obsessive cell phone use is extreme as she mentions the first thing she does in the morning is check her notifications that she receives overnight. She seems to use her cell phone and social media for the majority of her day as she scrolls through her socials and looks at memes (she spent just 5 hours one day looking at them.) She uses her social media to interact with people she knows and people she hasn’t met. She also uses it for her own personal entertainment. - 2) Was there anything in Sabra's account of her experience that got your attention? If so, what? - Yes, actually what caught my attention is how “normal” most of this seems to an average teen around Sabra’s age. Most of the generation undermine have a lot of the same issues Sabra is dealing with associated with cell phones and social media. Another thing that caught my eye was how on an app such as Instagram, Sabra feels the need to see all of her followers posts or she feels unsatisfied. 3) If you were her parent, how would you view Sabra's cell phone and social media use. Would you talk with her about that use and, if so, what might you say? - I would feel nervous in a way because though Sabra is communicating, she is not in person and she is almost replacing her “real-life activities” with ones over the internet. I would ask her to eliminate her use of social media and instead of communicating there, get her friends to come over and do activities together in person without a cellular device. I wouldn’t want her social skills to deteriorate. 4) How would you distinguish "normal" or "healthy" cell phone or social media use from "abnormal" or "unhealthy” use? - I would distinguish “normal” different from “abnormal” when discussing cell phones and social media by examining the number of hours a day spent on it, if you have tried to cut back and can’t, if you have let your phone take away from activities or
family and friend time, lack of control around your phone or social media, and ignoring the risk factors that are associated. Examining these things in someone can help determine if they are abusing social media and/or their cell phones. 5) The DSM-5 often asks to rate the "severity" of a disorder, giving it a "zero" if it does not qualify, and a 1, 2 or 3 for Mild, Moderate, and Severe versions of it, respectively. In Sabra's case, what would you give her, and why? - I would rate Sabra’s disorder a 2 for a moderate version of a social media and Cellphone disorder because I feel as if she does have an obsession but it doesn’t seem extreme as to where she couldn’t cut back on her usage if she tried.
