1 Biblical Metanarrative Essay THEO 104: Introduction to Theology Survey 2
Introduction The Bible is made up of multiple stories that complete and entire story. There are four parts within the Bible that aid in the storytelling and understanding of the Bible. The four of the Bible are: the creation, the fall, the redemption, and the new creation. The Metanarrative of the Bible is the way we see God’s plan for humanity as a whole. The examples within the Bible are provided so that humanity may use it as a guide to learn from. For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV). Creation “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 NIV). Creation involves God creating everything. Before He created the heavens and earth there was nothing. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3 NIV). God loves what He has created and has a plan for all of what he has created. “Then God said, “Let us   make mankind   in our image,   in our likeness,   so that they may rule   over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,   over the livestock and all the wild animals,   and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (Genesis 1:26 NIV). Humanity was given the power and ability to have authority of things on Earth, as well as the responsibility to take care of the Earth. The Fall The Fall in the metanarrative is an important part of the entire story. This part explains why humanity is not worthy of heaven and everlasting life because humanity is full of sin. “ For all have sinned   and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 NIV). The fall is encompassing in the story of Adam and Eve in the garden taking fruit from the one tree that God commanded them not to eat from. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a 3
delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, [ a ]   she took of its fruit   and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her,   and he ate” (Genesis 3:6 NIV). The relationship between humanity and God was broken because of the decision to disobey God (Gutierrez, Etzel, 2012 p.94). Redemption The textbook uses the examples of “buy back” or “to purchase” as way to describe what redemption means (Gutierrez, Etzel, 2012 p.93). God paid an incredibly high price to give mankind the opportunity for redemption. “ For God so loved   the world that he gave   his one and only Son,   that whoever believes   in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV). Through the work and life of Jesus, mankind has the gift of being redeemed. “God has made a way of restoration, a way of reconciliation, a way of redemption through the work of Jesus on the cross” (Gutierrez, Etzel, 2012 p.94). New Creation The new creation that a person becomes with the acceptance of Jesus Christ in their heart can be read about in Scripture. “ Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,   the new creation   has come; The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV). However, the new creation also talks about the new heaven and earth that is waiting for those that are saved. This place can be read about in Revelations 21:1-27, that describes of a place where God can be with mankind, and they will be his people. In this new creation of heaven and earth, there will be no more sin that has to be redeemed from. Biblical Worldview A biblical worldview is to look through the lens of scripture and seeing the world in the perspective of biblical principles. God loved humankind so much that He gave the world His Son. Through redemption God provides hope to humanity, though there is sin, humanity can still 4
