2 Systemic Analysis of the Family The culturagram was the systemic family analysis instrument chosen to analyze the Riverez family. The culturagram addresses the cultural background of individuals or families (focusing on ten aspects of culture: time in the community, legal status, reasons for relocating, languages spoken at home and in the community, health benefits, holidays and special events, the impact of crisis events, values about education, work, and family, and cultural and religious institutions) (Missouri Dept. of Social Services, 2013). Completing the culturagram allows human services providers to ask questions and get to know the cultural background of their clients, allowing for more culturally sensitive interactions and the development of a more culturally sensitive plan. In the case of the Riverez family scenario, the information related to cultural identity (Julio is Cuban, and Quianna is African American), traditions (family and church-related events), values (family and communication), and interactions with the extended family (estrangement by both Julio and Quianna with each of their parents). The culturagram also revealed communication barriers due to the family predominately speaking English except for Julio; this has created additional stressors for the couple and the family as a whole. Additionally, the family is dealing with some mental and emotional health issues that have resulted from Julio being shot and witnessing extreme violence within the neighborhood. Finally, I was able to extract that both parents dropped out of HS when they became pregnant with their oldest son Rico (15), and that Rico is experiencing his own behavioral and educational struggles. Considering the information derived from the culturagram, there are several ways to approach working with the family. As communication is a barrier and an added stressor for the couple and the family, I start by seeking ways to address this challenge as it bleeds into several other aspects of the challenges faced by the family. First, I would look into the free adult 2
3 education classes at City Colleges of Chicago, which offer English as a second language (ESL) for Julio and General Education Diploma (GED) help for Julio and Quianna. Additionally, attending counseling through the emotional wellness and behavioral health programs offered at Metropolitan Family Services (n.d.) will have several potential benefits for the family. Counseling can provide some assistance for the entire family in addressing the trauma they have experienced with Julio being shot, as well as witnessing the continued violence in their neighborhood. An additional benefit of counseling would be for Julio and Quianna to work together on expressing their thoughts and feelings and work better together to support and care for their family. Family counseling or at-risk youth counseling could also benefit Rico as he navigates being a teenager growing up in such a rough neighborhood and potentially address his run-ins with the law and his truancy issues resulting from feelings of being trapped with limited options. This initial approach aims to provide resources for improved communication and emotional well-being for the family and possible educational improvement opportunities. Systemic Analysis of the Community The eco map was the systemic family analysis instrument chosen to analyze the Englewood community. The eco map helps human services professionals understand various systems and resources influencing or impacting an individual client or family (Missouri Department of Social Services, 2013). In the case of the Englewood community, the ecomap included elements that contribute to the overall community dynamics like community organizations, education, and religious institutions, and support organizations to include problematic elements such as gang violence and their impact on and relationships with 3
