ABA 624 - Week 4 Discussion Describe rationales for conducting comparative, component, and parametric analyses: As an ABA Practitioner, how would you measure SEL Competencies during direct observations? (Refer to Article) What are the differences between external validity and internal validity? Provide specific examples as they could apply to your clients or other clients. Comparative Analysis is the analysis of two different types of treatments. Example: Did "Intervention A" or "Intervention B" work better? Component analysis analyzes pieces of a treatment package to determine which piece is influencing the dependent variable. Example: Within the intervention, which part worked the most? Parametric analysis evaluates the effects of different dosages of a treatment on the dependent variable. Example: What amount of the intervention was most effective? Enhancing and foregrounding social and emotional competencies is needed for civic engagement and social change, such as reflecting on personal and social identities, examining prejudices and biases, interrogating social norms, disrupting and resisting inequities, and co- constructing equitable and just solutions. The success of school-based SEL programs emphasizes curriculum design, coordination with larger systems, educator preparation and support, and program evaluation (Payton et. al., 2000). As an ABA practitioner, I would measure SEL competencies by using real-life situations as learning opportunities: When conflicts or challenges arise, I would use them as teachable moments, guiding my clients through the process of identifying their emotions, considering various solutions, and making responsible decisions. Validity is essentially how well an experiment measures what it is trying to measure (Cooper et. al., 2020). Internal validity is trying to determine does it properly demonstrates a cause-effect relationship. A threat to internal validity might be choosing the wrong measure or you have some bias in your dropouts so you think there’s an effect but you’re not accounting for the people that left the study. External validity tries to determine if the relationship is generalizable. An example of this would be to measure the number of SIB (Self Injurious Behavior) a client has after taking his/her medication or after a preferred activity. References
