Arianna Rodriguez Wendy Hinsey ENGL 1301 October 27, 2017 Common Sense Analysis In the pamphlet Common Sense, Thomas Paine manages to persuade the inhabitants into believing that American Independence was a vital decision. The use of persuasion by Thomas Paine had a positive outcome for those colonists in favor of gaining independence. He used a variety of rhetorical devices, such as: hyperboles, analogies, and tone, to state why obtaining American Independence was essential. A specific example of a hyperbole, in Common Sense, would be “The Sun never shined on a cause of greater worth” (Paine 84). In this line, Paine establishes the idea that achieving independence from Great Britain has a greater worth than anything else. He firmly believes that his position on gaining independence is the one and only correct belief. Through this he is able to help people see or feel the importance of this situation the way he does. …show more content…

Paine is showing how the decision the colonists make will be permanent, not necessarily for them but for their offspring. For example, if I were to carve my initials into a tree today, 50 years later, the initials will still remain there. The same concept is seen with the decision needed to be made by the inhabitants, if they are either for or against American Independence, the result will continue to have an effect on the following
