Slavery dates back to the seventeenth century, when they were brought by ship from Africa to America. Plantation owners has indentured servants from Europe, who was serving time for their actions, and slaves from Africa. There was a prevalent development of degrading treatment towards African slaves and the institution of slavery as a whole in the time period of 1607- 1750 in Virginia which can be seen by slaves getting taken advantage of, children being taken away or runaway ads and also not receiving the same basic human rights as other individuals .

Slavery began in the late 16th century to early 18th century. Africans were brought to American colonies by white masters to come and work on their plantations in the South. They were treated harshly with no payments for all their hard work. In addition, they lived under harsh living conditions, and this led to their resistance against these harsh conditions. The racism towards the African Americans who were slaves was at its extreme as they did not have any rights; no civil nor political rights.

Slavery is an association of authority and respect where one individual, the plantation owner, owns another individual, the slave. The owner can command the individual to various jobs around the plantation. Slaves were brought from Africa to work in the home, babysit plantation owner 's kids, and the most popular , to work on farms. Slavery was a dark time in America’s past. Not only did slavery separate millions of families, it destroyed the white man’s reputation to African people. Many slave owners treated their slaves well, many did not. They forced their slaves to live in deplorable conditions. Malnutrition and overworking often led to death. If you were a slave, would you risk it all and try to run away? You might not have a choice if you wanted to stay alive.

First and foremost, Stampp established the norm for slavery by using anecdotes from slaves and masters alike. He did this in an attempt to remain non-biased by presenting the lifestyle from both perspectives. Stampp does this in the format of ten chapters which details the setting, lifestyle, and economic issues in the South primarily during the 1830s until the 1860s. His first chapter entitled, “The Setting,” provides the reader with a thorough background in slavery in North America from its roots during the colonial period. Stampp believed that, “Southerners did not create the slave system all at once in 1619; rather, they built it little by little, step by step, choice by choice, over a period of many years; and all the while most of them were more or less blind to the ultimate consequences of the choices they were making.” Originally, according to Stampp, the use of native Africans as slaves was an obvious choice considering their expertise in agriculture. He argues that the reason African slaves were targeted was that their culture was accustomed to the tasks and heavy labor associated with an agricultural setting.
