It is very intriguing when someone who is related has personal experiences with major events such as World War II. My Great-Great Uncle Angelo was one of those ‘special’ people. I thought it would be very interesting to learn more about his involvement during such a tragic time in our world. He was in deployed to five places . Some major battles he was in were the Battle of the Bulge and Omaha Beach and I researched those because I did not know much about what happened.

On June 6th 1944, the U.S. and allied forces executed an amphibious assault named Operation Neptune, commonly known as D-Day, along the north-western coastline region of France. The operation covered in this paper will discuss a key battle during the Invasion of Normandy. The Invasion of Normandy was a successful operation focused towards German-occupied Western Europe during World War II. This paper will also cover a brief history and key points of The Battle of Omaha Beach. Critical reasoning and battle analysis will be expressed through what intelligence assets were applied, utilized and available during the time era. The analysis outcome will lead to an expressed alternative ending on The Battle of Omaha Beach. A detailed explanation of how intelligence assets could have been used to change the course of the battle will defend the explained alternative ending discussed. The main points of discussion will include Adolf Hitler’s decision to move most of his tank divisions and infantry units 150 miles north to Calais, the significance of the highly effective group known as the French Resistance and a famous illusionist Jasper Maskelyne.

The invasion of D-Day is the largest joint sea born invasion in the history of the world. Although very well planned, the amphibious landings were a gamble made by the Allied forces to gain foothold in Europe. Every American has heard about the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe on D-Day. However, how many Americans stop and think about how much planning, preparation and luck that went into making it the success that it is remembered for? I will attempt to depict what it took to conquer the Normandy beaches using historical and military facts that make it such an iconic event in the world’s history still today.

Eisenhower would lead the 6,483 sea vessels,about 800,000 men, and 12,000 aircraft across the English Channel toNormandy France (Benson 12). Eisenhower had hoped that the Germanswould fear an invasion at the close French city of Calais ("The Beachesof..." 9). June 6, 1944. The world has been at war for almost 5 years. The Axis Powers have occupied France and a lot of Europe. The USSR is pushing the Germans out of Russia and back towards Germany. The Allies are preparing to invade and take back Europe and defeat the Axis. The invasion starts with a mix of British and American paratroopers being dropped behind enemy lines to take important and over 100,00 soldiers are preparing to launch one of the largest sea invasions of all time. The soldiers are a mix of British, Canadian, and United States origin. The 5 beaches being attacked are codenamed Utah, Gold, Sword, Juno, and Omaha. The invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Overlord or D-Day, was perhaps one of the most important battles in the human history. The invasion took place on June 4, 1944, at the Coast of Normandy in France. Troops from over twelve countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America participated in the fight against Germany. Although the battles were enduring and hard-fought, the Allies achieved the final victory; the Allies were finally able to set their feet on the European soil again. The Allied invasion of Normandy was a major turning point of the war that led to the ultimate liberation of Europe from the Nazi forces.

After the outbreak of World War II, it became apparent that the United States would be a decisive factor in the outcome of the war. On December 7th, 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor sparked U.S. military intervention in both Europe and the Pacific. Looking for a man to lead, the senior officers selected Eisenhower for the job. All of Eisenhowers training and education was about to be tested. He was named Supreme Commander of the allied forces in the European Theater. He immediately had to face important decisions regarding the allied plans. Eisenhower was a strong supporter of an allied invasion of France, but Great Britain had other objectives. Eisenhower reluctantly organized an invasion of Africa, before heading to Sicily and Italy. While fairly new to the political scene, Eisenhower soon became an expert at navigating it's challenges. After the invasion of North Africa, known as Operation Torch, Eisenhower prepared for what may have been his defining moment. The invasion of France, known as Operation Overlord, was arguably the climactic moment in both World War II and Eisenhower's career("Dwight David Eisenhower").

While the Americans were landing, strong tides swept them away and they did not have any cover to protect them. The number of Allies grew fast as incoming troops got involved. Two million men fought at Normandy. Germany could not send troops from France to assist since the tides were too strong for them to land, therefor they were not allowed to bring in more numbers from France. As Germany fought they began to lose the battle and the Americans pushed until they met with the USSR. This was the first time Germany was attacked. Although he helped American troops in North Africa, Eisenhower’s biggest feat was the invasion of Nazi-occupied Western Europe, better known as D-Day. As the Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces in World War II at the time, Eisenhower gave permission for a massive invasion called Operation Overlord. He only had a window of four days to launch the attack, but jumped at the opportunity (Koves). The 40 mile stretch of the beaches of Normandy, France was divided into five sections: Juno, Sword, Omaha, Gold, and Utah (Operation Overlord Animated Map). Late at night on June 6th, 1944, aerial troops secured both the eastern and western parts of the beach. In the morning, seaborne soldiers began to attack the coast (Operation Overlord Animated Map). By June 27th, the Germans had wrecked their ports, assuming this would slow down the Allies. The Battle of Normandy was a turning point in World War II. Canada, America, and Great Britain arrived at the beaches of Normandy and their main objective was to push the Nazi’s out of France. The Invasion at Normandy by the Allied Powers winning this battle lead to the liberation of France and Western Europe. Most importantly Hitler was being attacked from both the eastern and western front, and caused him to lose power. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, General George C. Marshall called him to Washington for a war plans assignment. Eisenhower impressed both the general as well as The President (Theodore Roosevelt) with his well thought out plan to focus on weakening Germany before assaulting the Japanese. Because of this, he was placed in command of the Allied Forces landing in North Africa in November 1942. On D-Day, 1944, he was Supreme Commander of the troops invading France. After heading many decisive victories for the U.S., Eisenhower accepted Germany’s surrender on May 7, 1945. He returned home a national hero.

Eisenhower of the Allied Expeditionary Force. It is infamously known as the greatest invasion in the history of war. The United States alongside its allies the UK, Australia, Canada and eight other countries all participated in this amphibious invasion that would change the war and course of history. The reason this would change the war is because once the Allied Expeditionary Forces landed on the beaches in France the war was now on two fronts, which was a major problem for the Germany. The Nazis had previously forced the British out of France and back across the channel at Dunkirk in May ,1940 so the success of this operation was vital to the Allies and any hope they had to stop the Nazi war machine.
