The American Revolution was a political upheaval that took place between 1765 and 1783, during which colonists in the Thirteen American Colonies rejected the British monarchy and aristocracy, overthrew the authority of Great Britain, and founded the United States of America. On April 19, 1775, the first shots of the American Revolution were fired in Lexington and Concord. This was the monumental start of a pivotal war in American history. During the American Revolution, both the American and British sides had their advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of the Americans were the reason they came out victorious. Although American troops may not have had the military force and economic base that their British rivals had, they did believe strongly in their fight for freedom and liberty. Fighting on their own land led the Americans to a great advantage. They knew their territory inside and out. Minutemen were private colonists who independently organized to form well-prepared militia companies self-trained in weaponry, tactics and military strategies from the American colonial partisan militia during the American Revolutionary War. The American military leaders lacked successful experience, and there was no uniformly organized army. They lacked training and discipline. Shortages of ammo, food, clothing, and medicine proved to be a major disadvantage. This made many men flee and caused a vast amount of deaths. Another disadvantage was the rise of loyalists. Loyalists were Americans who were not in favor with breaking ties with the British. On the other hand, Patriots were the Americans who supported the efforts in gaining independence.
