Susan Musgrave’s poem dedicated for her father titled “You Didn’t Fit”, talked about the sad memories she had during her childhood with her father. To illustrate the theme of her poem Musgrave uses conflict, symbolism, and other literary tools. The theme is clearly heartbreak, and it is due to the gloomy memories and absence of her father throughout her life. The first example of symbolism that illustrates not fitting in is listed in the first stanza. “You didn’t fit in your coffin/ but to me it was no surprise/. All your life you had never fit in anywhere; you saw no reason to/ begin fitting now” (Musgrave286). Ultimately, the whole tone of the poem is sad and remorseful. The memories she has of her father in her life were all dark. As a grown adult Musgrave looks back at those memories and realizes they have affected her emotionally. She ends the poem with burning yearning feeling. “Like I am now: You won’t fit in your/coffin. My mother, after a life of it, says, “This is the last straw.”/And it is. We’re all clutching.” (45-48). Basically she and her mother are left alone without her father. Their whole lives they tried to be involved in his life but they weren’t. Her father is dead, and they are left with the pressure to hold on to their lonely lives. All of Musgraves literary tools were great and gave the poem the sentimental feelings of a broken heart that was chosen for her theme. Imagery, simile’s, metaphors, diction, repetition and conflict were all incorporated perfectly for her father’s poem. Her theme and ideas were quickly ruled out with the different tools.
