Bees Impact On Climate Change

Decent Essays

Climate change is defined as a change within climate patterns that is largely due to increasing levels of carbon emissions in our atmosphere. These emissions create a blanket like layer around the earth that creates a heat reflective surface. As the sun’s rays hit earth, normally it would be bounced back into space but the earth would still retain some heat from the rays that it was hit with. The emissions blanket creates a barrier that traps more rays within the atmosphere of the earth as heat rays have a harder time going through the blanket into space. This keeps the rays stuck in earth which creates the greenhouse effect that leads to the earth slowly heating up. This heat increase is very dangerous to the many species that live within …show more content…

They have various parts of their body that are vital to their survival such as their proboscis, antennae, legs, and eyes. The proboscis is very important because it is the main tool that bees use to take nectar out of flowers. These appendages can be described as a very long tongue that sucks out nectar that is then stored within the bee. Bees also have their antennae that are very useful for smelling and flight. The antennae help the bee differentiate odors as well as find the direction of where the odor comes from. This is needed to help detect nectar from flowers as well as help find predators that may be attacking the hive. The antennae can also be used to help measure flight speed to make sure the bee is not going too fast or too slow. It regulates how the bee moves in the air which helps it stabilize itself if it finds pollen or nectar. Bees are very social insects that rely on communication to run the entire hive as a small society. Each bee has a responsibility to help the hive and do specific jobs to help. They use their legs for a form of communication called the “waggle dance talk” that is a series of movements to help other bees find sources of food. Bees use their legs to collect pollen as their legs have small hairs that can catch and hold onto pollen that can be spread over the bee’s journey as they move from one flower to another. Bees have in …show more content…

Bees are very important for pollination of plants; pollen is a good protein source for bees but also allows plants to grow in bigger numbers. Pollen is known as a discharge from male flowers that is used to fertilize female flowers. As bees move from one flower to another the pollen is left onto different plants and when they reach a female plant, it helps create more flowers. Using an analogy, the pollen is a sperm cell which needs to fertilize the female egg; however since the flower cannot move there needs to be a carrier that takes the sperm to the egg. The bee is the carrier which helps the “population” of plants and they play this big role within the plants reproduction. This may not seem much for just flowers but bees are not just limited to flowers. There are many plants that need pollination such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Their role within this pollination process is huge as this is one of the reasons how flowers are essentially reproduced which makes them the tool to allow more flowers to be created. Bees are the reason why we get an abundance of these plants for our own consumption. They are responsible for the pollination of about 400 different types of plants and $19 billion worth of agricultural crops in the U.S. alone in 2010 were pollinated by bees. This shows how much they actually affect our food supply
