The sexual response cycle is a term referencing the changes that occur within the body as it is becoming aroused (Nevid & Rathus, 2010). This cycle, the sexual response cycle, consists of four phases. Phase one is excitement. Phase two is plateau. Phase three is orgasm. Phase four is resolution. To be honest, I have had no formal training in counseling. In fact, because of an unproductive experience in a psychology class in college, I have not been looking forward to attending class. I was content with just using common sense, and personal experiences to assist parishioners in coping with specific situations affecting their lives. I knew God had prepared me for my job as pastor, but when I read Webb’s book, “Crisis Counseling in the Congregation”, I realized that this book would prove useful in facilitating me in becoming a better counselor. When I was assigned to Rivers Chapel as a pastor, I used strategies I had learned, in the classroom, and on my previous jobs in counseling, which were common sense and life experiences. But now, after reading “Crisis Counseling in the Congregation”, I can perceive where common sense and personal experience would have been more productive if I had had a better understanding of the techniques Webb introduced in his basis toolbox. After reading Webb’s book, I know I can be a better counselor for my parishioners, their families, and my own family.

“Therapeutic building blocks” (Young, 2001, p. 30) is a phrase used to describe the helping relationship and the components of that counseling relationship. The ability to facilitate the client into relaying their story is the basis of therapy for change. I have listed my therapeutic helping skills below, and have described an example of each.

The following is a case study of a female client name “Verna Marie”. This section presents a brief patient assessment, including a case history of the client considered in the study. “Verna” is a beautiful thick proportioned Hawaiian who is about five feet ten inches tall. She is a sixty-year-old native Hawaiian who was born and raised on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. She is a very humble and wise lady who has very strong family values. “Verna Marie” classifies herself as heterosexual. She has been happily married to her husband “Zane” for almost forty-two years. They were young and in love and tied the knot at eighteen years old. At the age of twenty, “Verna” had her first baby boy. Later down the road they had conceived three boys and two girls all who are within three years apart. Her six children and twenty-eight grandchildren all live in walking distance to her home.

According to the CMSA (Case Management Society of America) and several others organizations that case management alone means that it is a collective system that helps the patient and their family needs through the communication, available resources of promoted quality, and cost-effective outcomes.

This week I assisted someone with filling out an application for the counseling center. I thought the experience went well. When I assisted the patient with filling out the application I noticed that the application was long and tedious. I think being able to assist patients with completing an application is beneficial for patients who cannot read or understand the questions. I also communicated with a person that was experiencing anxiety. The patient was crying in my office because she was experiencing anxiety about her diabetes. I discussed with the patient some of the challenges that she was experiencing in her life. I felt that I did a good job with assisting the person and calming her down. I also walked the patient up to the counseling center because she was interested in communicating with someone on a long term basis. At the counseling center the patient picked up an application which I thought was a good solution to her problem. I think I am getting more comfortable with communicating with patients on my own.

Implementing and designing a comprehensive school-counseling program needs to ensure that they are meeting state standards as well as the ASCA National Model. Assessing the comprehensive school-counseling program allows school counselors consider how well they are meeting the needs of the students, and meeting the requirements of the ASCA National Model and state requirements. School counselors gain the ability to assess the effectiveness of the program and answer the question “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program” (Susan Ireland, M. ED., 2014, slide 1).

Robbie J. is a 19 year old African American male and at this time he is currently a freshman at Henderson County University. The client has been referred to this office by his school residential advisor and family doctor. The reason behind this is that the client has not been attending his college classes and has been caught drinking on campus by campus security three times in the past two months. His parents have been advised by the school that if the client doesn’t attend counseling sessions he will be asked to leave and not return back for the following academic school year. The client must attend five sessions and also join an A.A. group.

This essay is an evaluation of two counselling models applied to a situation where a client has experienced loss and how a counsellor can create a therapeutic relationship with the client using each counselling model. It will also contain other skills a counsellor could use to obtain/maintain a good therapeutic relationship with the client.

However, Before I even started going into the counseling program. I had the goal to make sure I knew where to draw the line when it comes to helping as a friend and helping as a counselor. Admittedly, I learned this from my own parents growing up as my dad was a licensed counselor and social worker. He knew where to draw the line for himself. As far as myself, being in the counseling program, I naturally do have a strong desire to help individuals by guiding them to make sure they can find their own strength to take control of their own lives, live a more stress-free, and positive well-being life. The queerness experience of Latino and African-American folks are very alike. Both ethnic/racial group members not only share culture with similar features, but they also are exposed to the same systematic oppression experience. Latino and African-American queer people likewise have to deal with racism, xenophobic and homophobic sentiment, on a daily basis. Such oppression comes from their most meaningful source of support, which is their family and social community. Both African-American and Latino culture share a similar concept of meaning and purpose of a family as well as religious belief. These are not very queer friendly and make their community an oppressive environment. It is imperative to examine the interaction between ethnic/racial and sexual identity and how it affects the psychosocial well-being of sexual minorities. Likewise, to explore how group therapy can be used to their advantages.
