For example a child born with Autism might not mix well with his peers which in return could affect his behavioural, social and communicating development. There could also be health issue where a child could have contracted Meningitis as a baby and subsequently lost part of their limbs making their physical and development more difficult. Or a child who is not very nicely treated at home might not have the confidence to make new friends which will in turn affect all aspects of his development, make him shy and withdrawn. On top of the expected pattern of children and young people’s development including “physical, communication & intellectual & social, emotional & behavioural development there are also “personal and external” factors which will affect how they develop. For example, a baby born with a sensory impairment (let’s say deafness) will not develop at the same speed or reach the same milestones as a healthy baby. His speech will be affected as he cannot hear and repeat the sounds being taught to him. Socially he might not have as many friends as peers as he might not be able to communicate in a way that is known to them and his behaviour could also be erratic as he might not be able to hear and follow instructions given to him. There could also be external factors a child and young person cannot change: for example a baby could be born with a severe drug addiction after his mother abused substances

There are many factors that can influence a child and young person’s development, particularly in relation to their background. The formative years can be termed as crucial in regards to development and any major setback can create many problems for the future.
If a child is in poor health then this will have an impact on their development. For example, a child with uncontrolled asthma or cystic fibrosis may not be able to run around and be as active as their peers. Therefore, this would mean that his physical development might not be the same. Not being able to play outside would almost certainly affect the social development, as children make many friendships on the playground and at after school clubs.
All children and young people develop at different rates, but the order which they advance in differs very little. Children’s development tends to progress from head to toe, inner to outer, from simple to complex and from general to specific.
Through a young person’s development, from birth to 19 they are expected to follow a development pattern including physical, social, environmental, behavioural, intellectual and communicational. The expected pattern is seen as the average time period it would take to accomplish these skills.
Other factors that can affect a child’s development can include genetic problems passed on by a parent, mental or physical disabilities, poor living conditions causing illness such as asthma, learning difficulties, autism, dyspraxia, aspergers, poor communication skills due to sensory impairment such as deafness, blindness, partially sighted.
Learning Outcome: Understand the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth - 19 years.
There are many factors that influence a child/young persons development such as health issues, personal characteristics, motivation to learn, behaviour, sensory impairment, disability and learning difficulties. Even before birth a child needs to reach many milestones and however small or large they can cause a delay in a child’s development and in many cases are completely out of the child’s or parents control. Faulty genetics for example is a factor that is completely out of our control.
There are different things that can affect a child’s development in their background these are just a few of them: -
The area a child grows up in has an effect, for example if a child is brought up on a council estate in poor housing they are more likely to have health problems. If parents are not working or have low income jobs they are likely to buy cheaper food and usually this means lower quality which can lead to health problems. Children and their families may have lower expectations. They might settle for the life that id mapped out. If a child lives in high rise flats or appartments they have less oppportunities to play. In poor quality housing there may not be a garden or safe playing area. This is reducing the childs opportunities to develop their physical gross motor skills. This of course is not always the case
Complete the following four tables showing the different stages of development against the different ages and identify how development is holistic by showing links to other developmental aspects.
Children and young people often experience many things which have a direct impact on their development; things such as their family environment and structure, personality, hospital visits, childcare arrangements, and culture.
