Criminal Justice Trends The past trends of the criminal justice system are how we evaluate the system as a whole, and how we strive to make it better. The present is full of ideas towards a better future involving those better ideas made in the past. With today’s society of highly educated individuals, we can only speculate on what the future of the criminal justice system will be, but we can be assured of one certainty, it will change. The value of the criminal justice system in a changing society will also play a factor in what will become of the criminal justice system itself.
The Past The criminal justice system was first

Even bigger than that, two men were allowed to take out their own judgment by way of a gun duel based upon someone’s honor, or ego in some cases. All of these laws were a basic guideline of rules that the majority of people understood. Then the laws started to progress and become more decisive and more precise in order to get rid of all of the gray areas that people could exploit.
The Present The police officers of today have much more of a society impacted relationship with their jobs than they have ever had before. The police have adapted to better work with the communities that they are involved with compared to just overseeing them. This has been a really successful transformation on most accounts. The biggest affect that the police involvement has produced is cooperation. The community, for the most part, is more involved with helping out the police when they need it. Such things as neighborhood watches or an amber alert program within a community is a sure testament to the relationship with the community. The police have figured out that working with the community is an easier path to travel and they can get better results. There are all sorts of programs now where the police try to reach out to the people surrounding them. It is not uncommon for a police officer to be assigned to a high school or a high school program to help reassure the kids in the neighborhood and make them aware that the police are there to help make it a better and safer
The societal trends that I see impacting the criminal justice system over the next 10 years are not as easy to identify as I once thought. It is a question that has baffled most since the caveman first broke into another caveman’s cave and stole his fruit. There are
The Justice system seeks to prevent crimes and to capture those who have committed crimes. But what are the causes of crime, maybe poverty, or greed, or is sometimes caused by the system. Is the risk worth the reward and is reward the worth risking the punishment? Power and influence is threaded deeply into the Criminal Justice System. Are all offenders caught and processed with the same demeanor and given the same punishment? The system needs to be impartial to all offenders regardless of the offender’s social position, job or yearly income. The general punishment for most crimes is incarceration in most states with a difference in duration to adjust per each crime. This is the deterrent against crime. This is what should be keeping
What are the disadvantages of being in the Criminal Justice field? Is it the inappropriateness in the system’s procedures and processes? Or is it subjective thoughts pursued by the people underneath the system? Most people would know that the criminal justice system was created to prevent crime and secure the abundance of the human society. Unfortunately, the criminal justice system seems to be having a few inadequacies. My goal in this research essay is to discover the various insufficiencies that the criminal justice system has. It is imperative that people realize that if the criminal justice system is unfair, more than likely it would stem from the modifications of criminal law throughout the years.
For the past 50 years, America’s criminal justice system has encountered several significant changes dealing with courts and policing. According to Marion and Oliver (2006), the historical Supreme Court rulings like Mapp v. Ohio and Miranda v. Arizona mold the way courts and law enforcement handle individuals charged with committing crimes. This paper will discuss the evolution of courts and law enforcement reflects the diverse and changing need for today’s population which is first importance, the urgency for cooperation and communication among criminal justice agencies and law enforcement within the country. Individuals must
Our criminal justice system is complex and multi-faceted. When people talk about criminal justice reform, they are actually referring to a number of distinct issues and problems. On a national level, the focus on reform can be seen as a recognition that the “tough on crime” legislation that was all the rage in the 1980s and 1990s – mandatory minimums, “three strikes” laws, enhanced sentences for drug crimes to name a few examples – created more problems than they were designed
From its early inception as a necessary aspect of modern society to its broken state that can be seen today, the American penal system has changed radically in recent history from an institution that performed the duty of safeguarding the public from those too dangerous to be left unsupervised to a business model concerned more with generating a profit for shareholders. With a 500% increase in inmates that is rivalled by no other country, the United States leads the world in imprisoning a fast-growing portion of its population. It is without a doubt that adverse changes in policy regarding imprisonment along with the formation and privatization of the prison industrial complex contributes substantially to the state of mass incarceration in the United States and will continue to shape its future for the years to come.
The criminal justice field is an ever evolving field. As today’s technology changes so does the way the criminal justice field interacts with that technology. As our society changes the technology that we use will also be altered to fit the situation. The barriers that come along can affect how the criminal justice field interprets what to do next. The basis of the criminal justice system is to protect and serve the community as a whole. Keeping up with the changes in society is a vital part of our
Another question that pops into mind about community policing might be how does community policing work? A focus of Community Policing is problem-solving. Police will still respond to emergencies. On the other hand, many calls to the police are not police-related. They are more effectively handled by other agencies. As the amount of these non-emergency calls lessen, officers can spend more time working with citizens to solve crime and chaos problems, with better communication among police and the citizens, officers can better use and share crime information with the public, residents can tie people with other public and private agencies that can
This is a reflective paper drawn upon knowledge acquired from various criminal justice courses that I have taken, as well as from the syllabus of materials utilized in this course (i.e., CJ 435 Organization and Management). This essay is intended to be my reflection on the theory of justice, considering the historical development, evolution, and structure of contemporary criminal and juvenile justice systems. Also, this paper addresses the theoretical and ethical foundations of justice, legal theory, and the role of the U.S Constitution. It consists of five sections, which are as follows: Criminological Theory, Policing, Ethics, Juvenile Justice, and Constitutional History. In each section, I will address two topics.
It evolved into more of a community friendly atmosphere. With technological at the forefront and less human interaction that was a problem. Police relied more on tech than the human component, by being in their cars they were perceived as outsiders. Before, walking by foot they had to talk with the community. With the rise of technologies, they had lost the human component of not talking to the citizens their selves. Community-oriented evolved from the work of researchers at Michigan State University. Researchers said the police departments should partner with citizens to address crime and fear. Police cannot be successful without the help of the community. Out of the research police officers dwelt deeper into the community and not just by addressing crime, but also quality-of-life issues (Gaines and Kappeler, 2011). The interactions of police and citizens communicating with each other while responding on house calls, however, had a big impact on how the communities saw police. “Police organizations at this time were more centralized, specialized, and bureaucratic.”(Net Industries,
Over the years, the Criminal Justice System has developed in many ways. As the system and society grow, its naturally for advances to be made. most of the time, these advances only better society. But, there are times when advances create issues and barriers for the system.
In the past (early 2000) the criminal justice system found problems with a demanding change that was going nowhere fast, I’m refereeing to the fast pace world and the computer savvy criminals that were growing. The police and other law enforcement agencies tried to keep up and gain the upper hand. While
Throughout the United States, there are many correctional facilities that house thousands of inmates. Individuals who work within these facilities have a tough job in maintaining the prison facility and the inmates. Correctional officers are called the front line workers and are responsible for looking after the inmates. The officers who work for the correctional facility deal with issues that may arise inside and outside of the facility. The subject to discuss is to evaluate the past, present, and future trends pertaining to the development and operation of institutional community based corrections. An identification and analysis of
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals. (Martin Luther King, Jr, Paragraph 1, 2017). Criminal justice has three central components that make up the system they include law enforcement, courts, and corrections. This paper will describe the origin and history of the criminal justice system in the United States. Explain the functions of the police, courts, and corrections in the United States and define the concept of crime and the major theories of criminal behavior.
The career of being a police officer has become increasingly harder as time continues. One of the biggest tasks for officers to deal with is public perception and legitimacy. These two monumental cornerstones are the key to police officers relationship with the rest of the world trust is influenced with how the public feel about the way officer handle their job. Police officers and the community have a major disconnect due to how the officer feel like the community problems should be handled and how the community wants their problems to be handled. The blame for this disjuncture is not a simple remedy, it's not an overnight task. Nor can you choose a side and blame one but there is a side that holds little more power over the other, and that's the officers. The most utilized sector of the government has the power to destroy a community through its ruthless actions or enlighten the community for future generations. It has lot of it has to do with their outlook on the world, that has been shaped by experience in the field. Police officers jaded world outlook and their comradery(Us vs. Them) mentality has an influence on how they see the world and they do their jobs. In the same breath how communities views the world and how officers should do their jobs. Observing a cop's life through the eye of a bystander is completely different than another officer. Cop culture, mentalities, police unions, conflicting views and transparency with the community all have impact on hardships
