Math is a universal subject which the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines as "the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations." Distinctly, the Oxford Dictionaries defines mathematics as “the abstract science of number, quantity, and space.” One thing that is clear amongst both these definitions is that math is complex and cannot be defined so loosely, which is why I find it difficult defining the literacy of mathematics. However, after reviewing the standards, I have attempted to do so. Being literate in mathematics means that one can count, compare and contrast numbers, understand and …show more content…
I don't think they are meant to be because they do not represent ways of teaching, but rather, the standards that need to be met and what exactly a student has to be able to do by the end of a certain grade. The multicultural and culturally responsive pedagogy comes in when teachers are seeking to meet the standards. However, it makes me wonder if the standards could be written strategically to be culturally responsive and if that would encourage and assure that teachers are in fact being multicultural. Since the main goal of the common core is to create these universal standards so that students can be college ready, these other aspects are not taken into consideration. The common core requires a lot of its teachers and students and often there isn't time left for teachers to include culturally responsive pedagogy. All the needs of the students need to be met, it is therefore difficult to balance the needs of higher expectations with cultural education. For example, one of the standards for second graders, 2.NBT(numbers & operations in base ten) is “explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations” (pg. 18), one way to include culturally relevant pedagogy would be offering students the option to either draw an illustration, create a poem or rap, write and act out a short scene, or make a poster explaining why these …show more content…
It is therefore up to the teacher to find ways of intervention to teach and cater to those students needs. because the standards do not regard the students it is setting a tone for it to be highly unlikely that teachers will seek to support these students. the implications of literacy means that the literacy requirement is once again not black and white, different students may or may not met all the standards and they will likely not reach them at the same time. thus i feel that the definition of literacy should reflect that and isn't so clearly defined or can be clearly evaluated because of this. it also means that the these students will need different ways or additional resources when learning and may have to showcase mastery in a different way. it goes to show that literacy is subjective. this definition indicated that all student need to be literate by mastering these specific things and that includes english language learners. it offers no guidance for educators of diverse learners. it's a one size fits all kind of policy that leaves these students out. are there alternative testing options?how do the standards play out in the curriculum would more clearly depict the implications. if you need to learn all these things to be successful as the next grade then most likely

In 2009, states around the country began adopting the Common Core State Standards. These standards were put in place to ensure that each child was on the same academic level by high school graduation. As the global marketplace becomes increasingly more competitive, the United States hopes that Common Core will enable the coming generations to be better prepared. As of right now, my working thesis is Common Core is overall unsuccessful in its effort, and discontinuing or, at the least, replacing it would improve the testing scores /academic progresses, mental health, and attitude towards school of the children in the United States. My two articles, “Reading Don’t Fix No Chevys (Yet!): Motivating boys in the age of the Common Core,” by Jeffrey D. Wilhelm and Michael W. Smith (2014), and “Why Massachusetts Gave Up on Common Core,” by Mary Clare Reim (2015), both provide evidence on Common Core to support my thesis.
requires students to develop higher critical thinking skills. Jobs may be on the line if students do
[The unit’s standards all come directly from the ELA Common Core standards of first grade expectations. The ELA Common Core standard mandates what the students will be doing and learning. Each lesson’s learning objective is derived from the ELA Common Core standard. The learning experiences’ purpose also aligns with the learning objectives so students can meet the objective. The standards and learning objectives for my learning segment support children’s active and multimodal learning and language and literacy development in an interdisciplinary context by ensuring that children are learning through a variety of activities and applying their vowel team and vowel sound knowledge to an assortment of learning contexts such as poetry and short
Common Core State Standards, or Common Core for short, has been making headlines in 2014. Not a curriculum, Common Core is a set of standards defining the skills in which students from kindergarten through 12th grade need to have each year in order to be prepared for the next grade. Creating these national academic standards was a state-led initiative that included a coalition of educators and governors. Administrators, educators and parents participated in the developement of the actual standards. Here's a look at how Common Core evolved.
Common Core State Standards is being heard throughout the education world. Many cringe when the words are spoken and many fight to support what the words stand for. Common Core was introduced in 2009 by state leaders. Common Core State Standards were developed to prepare children for the business world or the reality after grade school. “The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy, also known as ELA” (About the Standards, n.d.). The goals for the standards outline what students should know before leaving his or her current grade level. “The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live” (About the Standards, n.d.). This is an ambitious goal, but with much support can be accomplished. According to Common Core State Standards Initiative (n.d.) The Common Core has been adopted by forty-two states already and is accompanied by District of Columbia and Department of Defense Education Activity. Common Core was developed to improve the academics in society’s schools. Academics in the past years have not been successful and the United States has fallen behind international education. “One root cause has been an uneven patchwork of academic standards that vary from state to state and do not agree on what students should know and be able to do at each
Within the last couple of years the Education system was introduced to the Common Core Standards. There are many people that still do not really understand what the Common Core Standards are and what they do. I am one of those people. As an education major, I know some about the Common Core, but there are still some things that I do not understand. The Common Core is set up for Educators to use as a plan that will help them teach and assess how their students are doing. The Common Core is set up across the country. All schools have to follow the Common Core. For each grade level, they have different standards that show the teachers what their students should be able to accomplish by that grade level. Each student will all be assessed and graded
Common Core standards were introduced in 2010 and now schools all over the nation are implementing Common Core literacy standards for writing in physical education. According to the website SPARK, which is dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating research-based programs that promote lifelong wellness, “The standards prepare students for college and the workforce by providing them with various skills that enforce writing, thinking critically, and solving real-world problems” (SPARK, 2013). The Common Core standards are made up of three components: 1) Text types and purposes 2) Production and distribution of writing 3) Research to build and present knowledge. Physical Education teachers create lesson activities based on these components.
The Common Core State Standards are a state attempt to create strong educational standards. The standard are created to ensure that students in the country are learning and grasping the information that are given in the classrooms for them to succeed academically. The Common Core plan included governors and education commissioners form forty-eight states and the District of Columbia. They wanted to make sure the standards are relevant, logical and sequential. For content all subjects must have critical-thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Some positive aspects of this policy is that it prepares our students for a competitive global jobs. It can provide national connections in education. Designed to shape the best standards so that all states will be taking a step ahead in education. These standards had been created after extensive research by professional educators for excellence in education. The CCS focus on what students expectations of learning, and achievements. Educators do not need to worry that the standards will make their jobs look redundant because they are in charge of creating lessons to teach their students the content and skills that the CCS demands. The teachers do not feel that the standards are one-size-fits-all. Some negative aspects of the policy are that is a program created by solely the government. The CCS is a program put together on idyllic situations in education by individuals who have subsidy and students ahead of the learning
Desks are aligned individually in rows facing a chalkboard. A red-shiny apple is sitting on the teachers table. Along the multi-color walls are students work. In the back corner of the room there are a few computers. Students are prepped to take an online test. No paper, no pencil. The work is all done on a computer. What was the “old” technique of learning has transition into a “new” way. This new tool is a way to improve a students’ education. It has been voluntary adopted by over 40 states. The standards serve as one of the most promising learning method in years in effort to improve our country’s school system. The question is whether the Common Core standard should be implemented as a nation-wide requirement
One image of a dystopia is everyone doing the same thing at the same time because of the government. The common core may not have been intended to be Big Brother but it is intending to be that way. Although some set of standards is necessary, the Common Core Standards do not work because they do not cater to the needs of the individual student.
The Common Core State Standard for Language Arts, which is the current standards observed by North Carolina, determines the particular proficiency students need in order to be prepared for their academic and professional futures according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. They add that some of these skills include, but are not limited to critical thinking skills, literacy skills and analytical skills. Current process, for the most part, do help establish a framework for keeping materials relevant to the maturity level of students. However, if students or parents feel as if their values or beliefs don’t line up with current standards of education, complications can arise. Complications such as the censorship of beneficial literature can have negative consequences in society. In agreement with Judy Blume, “ If every individual with an agenda had his/her way, the shelves in the school library would be close to empty.” Although there are many books that have either been banned or challenged, according to The Committee on Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association, To Kill a Mockingbird is listed as “being among the 10 most frequently challenged books” (Karolides, Bald, and Sova 483).
While Governor Jindal’s case is arguably the most publicized in the issue of adopting a set of common standards which may violate the 10th Amendment of the US Constitution, it is not the only case. The first case challenging the use of Common Core State Standards, Adams v. Kentucky Education Officials (2008), was filed because the Kentucky Legislature is ultimately responsible for education but never voted as a body to approve Common Core and some of the related agreements with the US Department of Education, the adoption of Common Core was not legally performed (Kentucky parent sues to block Common Core State Standards, n.d.). The case was dismissed on grounds that Mr. Adams didn’t have a personal injury and thus could not file suit. In 2015, a group of Missouri residents and taxpayers filed a petition for relief against Missouri Governor Nixon in Sauer V. Nixon (2015). This case alleged that it was illegal for Missouri to be a member of a consortium to develop national standards and assessments based on the grounds that it violates federal law guaranteeing state and local control of curriculum, programs of instruction. While the case was eventually dismissed, it was clear by the rationale presented by Sauer that the 10th Amendment is valid and should be
The Executive Branch of the United States Government and the President has the powers that can influence many things one of them is our Education and the Common Core law that had taken in to effect back in June 2010. Even before the Common Core States standards were, official dozens of states had adopted the standards.
How many different ways are there to do addition? According to the common core there are several ways to add. This is one reason of the many reasons why parents are against the common core. Parents are not the only ones protesting against the new teaching curriculum. Teachers are protesting just as vividly too. The common core needs to go, not only is it confusing for the parents but it is hard for kids; and it is hard for the teachers to teach.
