Common core standards were developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Standards were developed with input from educators and administrators from around the country. The standards focus on English Language Arts and Mathematics, but standards span across other core subjects taught in public schools from kindergarten to 12th grade (Chen, 2017). There are even common core standards now in place for pre-kindergarten instruction to ensure every student is fully prepared to enter public school (Chen, 2017).

The standards are divided into two sets, mathematical practice, and mathematical content. The mathematical practice standards describe ways that students should engage with mathematics content as they grow in maturity from kindergarten through high school. The mathematical content standards stress a balance between procedural skill and conceptual understanding (IDEA Partnership, 2010). Students will learn math skills and use them while they are being applied to real-world mathematical problems. A teacher can assess a student on their understanding of the standards by having them explain the process they used to solve the problem, along with asking what rule was used (if any) to solve the problem. They used to separate the children into groups of high, medium, low, and gifted etc. Over the years education has changed in fact education is always changing daily to improve the way we as teachers should teach or how we should implement different curriculums in our lessons gearing to the standards. In my opinion it feels to me as an educator that we are not really teaching but more being dictated on how to teach to our students by tons of assessments, FSA, district test, and collecting data. The Common Core State Standards are a state attempt to create strong educational standards. The standard are created to ensure that students in the country are learning and grasping the information that are given in the classrooms for them to succeed academically. The Common Core plan included governors and education commissioners form forty-eight states and the District of Columbia. They wanted to make sure the standards are relevant, logical and sequential. For content all subjects must have critical-thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Some positive aspects of this policy is that it prepares our students for a competitive global jobs. It can provide national connections in education. Designed to shape the best standards so that all states will be taking a step ahead in education. These standards had been created after extensive research by professional educators for excellence in education. The CCS focus on what students expectations of learning, and achievements. Educators do not need to worry that the standards will make their jobs look redundant because they are in charge of creating lessons to teach their students the content and skills that the CCS demands. The teachers do not feel that the standards are one-size-fits-all. Some negative aspects of the policy are that is a program created by solely the government. The idea behind Common Core is simple: uphold clear parameters as to what concepts students need to understand for their grade-level nationally. It seems like a no-brainer. Every student, no matter his or her background or geographic location, is entitled to the same education, and expected to know the same things by the time they graduate. In this paper I will argue that Common Core standards are necessary in today’s educational system.
Common core is inappropriate for young children; it does not help them learn it making it hard to learn because of all the thing that have to be done with common core. Common core came together because of the education leader in the United States and other countries would benefit from a common core expectation for student completing a secondary education and would college and career ready. There was a time when teachers were allowed to teach however they saw fit. Anyway they felt would help the student to make things easier. In just years later, one thing would change it all. It was in 2009 when the state leaders including governors and state commissioners would launch Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This system provides clarity and consistency, focuses on building blocks of learning, and prepares students to succeed in the 21st century.
As we all know, Common Core is a state standard in the educational system. The Common Core State Standards are the contrivance of a commission of governors and education leaders from forty-eight states sponsored by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. My group and I decided to work with the education policy on the common core state standards. The main purpose was to have high school graduates be ready for college and/or career. The common core was implemented because of the challenges that high school graduates were facing once they were out of high school and into college and noticed that they weren’t ready. The common core has benefited some students, but it has also failed others. I will go over the history, implementations, effectiveness, and my personal suggestions on this topic.
Common Core continues to have many teachers in an uproar, but the development of these standards was to help synchronize curriculum across the United States to ensure that students were college and career ready once they graduated high school. In 2009, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School Officers (2010) were responsible for developing the Common Core standards. These groups were two private organizations that consisted of 48 state leaders, two territories, and the District of Columbia.
Many states and parents are in turmoil over the Common Core standards. There are many misunderstandings about the Common Core that makes it hard for school districts to implement without resistance from the local population. The Common Core came about because a group of Governors were discussing the differences in student education in different states. The Governors noticed that students in different states received different educations. To ensure that all students no matter where the live or go to school would receive a quality education. In 2009 a group of governors called the National Governors Association for the Best Practices (NGA) enlisted the help of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) together they worked on creating a system to ensure that all students received the same quality of education. They created a listed of standards that all students should be able to achieve and that all states should be able to implement using whatever curriculum that the states saw fit.
The Common Core curriculum also has a set of standards for educators to follow. These standards set the bar for lesson preparation, delivery, and student support. First let’s define what the Core Curriculum is and what is contains. The standards demonstrate what students are expected to learn at each grade level, so that the parents and the teachers can understand and support their learning. On corestanders.org the standers are very clearly stated and they are: research and evidence based, clear, understandable, and consistent, aligned with college and career expectations, based on hard content and the application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills, built upon the strengths and lessons of current state standards, and lastly informed by other top-performing countries to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society. The standards concentrates on core ideas and procedures starting in the early grades. This way it gives the teachers the time they need to teach and gives students the time need to master those concepts (Common Core State Standards Initiative).
