We received our team project overview and rubric on February 23rd, 2017. Andrew Berthiaume, Sydney LoCastro, and I began discussing films from the class viewing list and many others. Our top three choices were: 1) American Psycho, 2) American Beauty, and 3) Lion King. We came to the conclusion to choose the film American Psycho. I personally had never seen the film before this, while Andrew and Sydney have. The movie is based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis, which in an interview had written the book without the intent of it ever being filmed. I found this rather intriguing, since it made double the budget in gross revenue. To summarize the film American Psycho, it is about Patrick Bateman, a Harvard graduate, who has an entourage of high-powered …show more content…
Patrick Bateman displayed each component of The Big 3 by Eysenck, The Big 5 by McCrae and Costa, even the lesser known The Dark Triad. The Dark Triad includes Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy. Patrick is seen displaying Machiavellianism when he interacts with the bartender, while she gets him his drink, he talks to himself in the mirror saying how he wants to “stab her to death and play around with her blood”. Narcissism is the most prevalent throughout the motion picture, seen in his workout routine, his expensive suits, skincare products, his business card, and money. All the things that make him who he is, is his identity. Psychopathy is seen when he brutally murders his victims. For example, when he kills Paul Allen, he waits and smokes a cigar before he cleans up after himself, showing no remorse for his actions. The brutality of each crime and murder weapon differs but the result remains the same, i.e. using a nail gun, a chainsaw, an axe, or a gun. He mutilates the bodies of his victims, claims to have eaten some of their brains, and feels invincible that no one has caught on, even in his blatant attempts in tell his friends and fiancé of his extracurricular activities. The very idea that a character can encompass a whole concept is …show more content…
I am not skilled in public speaking by any means and I know that with time and practice I can gain more confidence. I enjoyed picking the clips for the presentation because I felt it gave our presentation more liveliness and the attention of our audience. It also gave us time to gather our thoughts and remember to speak calmly and collectively, even if our goal was not fully attained. I am proud of what we were able to accomplish in the limited time frames we were able to meet. My personal feedback on this project that though it was challenging at times, I enjoyed being able to explain it in a way that was easy to understand from a student-to-student perspective. Sometimes I believe we as students get “lost in translation” and are afraid to ask to break ideas down into laymen terms. This project was a great opportunity to teach others the way that we think and understand concepts and general ideas. This class has opened my eyes to viewing videos and life in a different light. For example, in high school, by default a student would read a poem in English class and break down its’ hidden meeting, and from then on you subconsciously do that with everything you read. As for this class, I feel that yes I do review films for the hidden meaning but also to take a step back and enjoying the moment in which I am
The “Reagan 80s”, a Wall Street bull market and excess for the sake of excess. During this decade, the economy was coming out of a severe recession after 1982 and it exploded shortly thereafter. It seemed out of nowhere, people were getting rich by investing in the stock market. The 80’s was the decade of the corporate raiders. Powerful, money hungry investors would buy companies when their values were on the line and dismantle them, selling off the assets piece by piece and becoming filthy rich off of it. Clearly, these investors had to have had the education and long career in the financial industry in order to have the knowledge to pull off maneuvers like this. This whole idea of excess that ran rampant in the 80s leads us to ask
The camera migrates into the forest passing various creatures with big, bulging, brown eyes. The fluffy irresistible fur of the rabbits begs to be stroked. The rabbits skip away laughing leaving the grass blowing in the cool breeze. Then, the camera travels to the right where an owl plays tag with a speedy mouse under the blue sky. Finally, the technology races towards the sky revealing heart shaped clouds. Peaceful scenes such as the one just described constantly appear in Disney films since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. However, when depicting nature, should unrealistic imagines occupy the screen? Consider a political film such as Bambi, when making such an enormous statement regarding hunting, should the film illustrate nature accurately? How about more recent movies such as The Lion King? Parents take their prized possessions, their children, to see these shows. Children absorb their information and experiences around them like a sponge. In addition, Disney and other films to this day are instrumental in a minor's childhood. Considering the impact of the films, one would predict that two popular Disney films, Bambi and The Lion King, would portray nature factually. Nonetheless, The Lion King and Bambi both depict nature accurately.
The original 1933 King Kong was created as a movie: to convey a story and entertain and audience. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake took the foundation for King Kong and expanded upon it in almost every way in order to “make again” the amazement of the original for a modern audience. Audiences received the original King Kong very well. The stop motion sequences of Kong were amazing for their time and the movie grossed $90,000 in its opening weekend. In order to bank upon its success again sequels were made and then in 1976 a remake was made to improve upon the original. Paramount updated the movie to color, changed the story, and cast Jeff Bridges, a well-known actor of the time, as the lead. Although the movie received mixed reviews, it did
The movie I chose was Easy A because there are many psychological concepts this movie that relate to real-life events and it covers many theories we learned about in this class. Easy A was released in 2010 and directed by Will Gluck. It’s about a teenage girl named Olive who accidentally admits to her friend Rhi that she was having sexual relations with boys. She felt pressured into lying since her friend had already engaged in sexual acts with her boyfriend. A rumor then spread and many people in the school then ignored Olive because they thought what she did was an immoral act, but the guys started giving her more attention. I feel that this applies to many
The original King Kong (1933) was fairly different from the new 2005 version. In the new version, Kong was much more humanized. For example, in the end when Kong falls off of the building and dies, it is heartbreaking. But in the original, there is a sense of relief when Kong finally dies, after terrorizing New York City and especially Ann. Kong and Ann share a more profound bond in the newer film. That is shown when Kong is finished fighting the three Tyrannosaurus Rex, she willfully goes with him, after he saves her. Also, towards the end you see Kong and Ann having fun playing on the ice back in New York. Ann wasn't afraid of Kong in the remake.
The first video watched was Corporate Communication BUS 210, “Introduction to Corporate Communication” and right at the beginning I had to pause the video and make sure I had the paper structured correctly. Once the video began and the individual started speaking “The goal of this course is to teach you how to apply the concepts of effective communication in the business setting.” (Saylor Academy, n.d.) I had to watch that section repeatedly to ensure I had the information noted correctly, as the gentleman was a fast speaker. Using this method took me eight minutes to watch a two-minute video. It was the same with each video I watched. I did not feel as if the method became easier
The video I have decided to evaluate is “The beauty of being a misfit” by Lidia Yuknavitch. With Lidias speech, she was able to get her point across clearly, I was able to follow and not lose interest or track of the message she was trying to perceive to her audience. Lidia was able to get her main idea and point across by reaching out to her audience with her own personal life story of being a misfit in almost everything she did, but still being a misfit and accomplishing her dream was clear and understanding. So, clear that while she was speaking, my life and my misfits were running through my head. Her purpose of her speech was effective because it made me realize that you can only live out your story and make it what you want to do with
In the movie Lion King it compares and contrast a lot with Hamlet. Such as Scar leading Mufasa to his death, the brothers taking over, and both of the attempts to kill the king’s sons. Claudius and Scar have very similar mentality’s. In both of the movies Claudius and Scar don't want to be seen as the bad ones so they are being mischievous ,lying, and using others for their dirty work.
American Psycho can be interpreted in two ways: either Bateman, due to his mental disorder, killed multiple people, or he was having hallucinations about his kills. If he truly committed murder the DSM-5 diagnosis for Patrick Bateman indicates that he is suffering from antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and borderline
Macbeth the movie and Lion King are very different, but very similar. One is a cartoon animation movie by Disney and the other is a play written by William Shakespeare that was later produced into a movie by Ian McKellan. Both movies have a tradegy, but also have a small heros journey and I will show the comparsion between them both.
For this psychological disorder analysis paper, I picked the movie American Psycho. American psycho is a 2000 American Canadian black comedy psychological thriller horror film directed by Mary Harron. The movie was based on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel with the same name. The movie was stars by Christian Bale playing the main character and the movie’s narrator, Patrick Bateman. The movie was set in New York City in the years of 1980s. The main character, Patrick Bateman is a investment banker. The movie starts with Patrick doing his everyday activities like hanging out with his friends and co-workers, going to clubs, working, and his daily morning routines. Then his insanity starts, he starts killing people. The first killing was on one of his colleague at his company named Paul Allen. He then takes over Paul Allen’s apartment and use it to conduct a series of illegal outrageous behaviors such as rape, torture, cannibalism, and mutilation necrophilia.
Based on analyzing my presentation video and reading the comments my fellow classmates have given me, I’m very satisfied with how I did and presenting to everyone about Greek life from my point of view to shine a new light on college students who are not aware of what Greeks really do. However, in reviewing the video there were two main issues that easily came to my attention and my classmates were able point in out in the comments they gave me. These problems were not very severe but can defiantly be improved on as it does become a disruptive to the audience.
I felt that it would have been beneficial for me to use more visual aids in presenting my topic. Rather than just talking about my topic and the music, I feel that if I showed some actual footage
“I have all the characteristics of a human being… but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust…I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip” (Easton Ellis 23). Patrick Bateman said this quote about himself in the book American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis. In the novel American Psycho, Patrick Bateman is an unfathomably rich, fashionable and meticulous man that works on Wall Street. ☺ He is very approachable, gets all of the attractive women but he also bears secrets. Patrick Bateman is an avid cocaine user, chronic club goer and he also murders anything that breathes while he is on his blood lust. Not only does he kill people, but he also eats his victims as well. I can predict that Bateman will eventually be incarcerated, I can connect with Batemans desire for “nice” items, and I also can visualize the killing of every single person that he comes in contact with. ☺
I am not a fan of horror movies or book because I am scared of watching and reading them , so whenever I saw those genera of works I will not go read or watch them. So when the first day I noticed I have to read this famous horror genera novel “psycho” by Robert Bloch watch the movie of it , I already feel like I want to quit, but I can not. Well, the last solution will be I have to force myself to read the novel and watch the movie. However it didn’t really give me a scary feeling , it is more like an exploring for a mysterious event which it really caught my attention. due to the movie and it’s the movie review I saw on the internet saying it is a really scary and don’t ever watch it, then I felt like it will be a challenge so I try .
