This movie is trying to symbolize what goes on in the world today in regards to racism and stereotypes. He tries to make a point on how societies view themselves and others in the world based on there ethnicities. This movie intertwines several different people's lives, all different races, with different types of beliefs. The movie Crash, a film that follows the individual lives of several people and how they all intertwine with one another, hints at the underlying issue of race and the unconscious bias that are hard wired in us. It also shows that racism is not a one way street, but that it travels in both directions and because of this many film critics gave it a high praise. In this paper I will examine how it relates back to the topics we have covered in class, like unconscious bias, racism, and police interactions.

Crash is a movie about race and stereotypes and its effects on the various people living in the Los Angeles area. The movie boost racial awareness and it requires close observation from the viewer. We see a variety of races including African American men and women, several Hispanics, a Middle Eastern family, and a few Asians. We see the ups and downs of each character and it helps us see where they are coming from, and potentially why they are racist against different people. It seems that we almost begin to feel sorry for the different characters regardless of what they are doing or how they are acting because of each of their circumstances.

The movie “Crash” tells complex stories of caucasian, african american, latinos, koreans, iranians, law enforcement, criminals, low and upper class in which all is characterized under racism within each group. Each race is guilty and are victims of racism. Throughout the movie, it portrays racism against other members of different races which results in repercussions of those perceptions. By stereotyping people, this causes people to be judged by their cover. Most people do not understand a person's culture, so they will be first to judge them based on what they have heard from outside sources.

The movie “Crash”, by Director and Writer Paul Haggis, follows 8 ethnically diverse families/ individuals facing the struggle of modern day racism and stereotypes created and faced in modern Los Angeles, California. These individuals take the roles of individuals living their daily lives within Los Angeles, California while facing stereotypes. The cast portrays: 2 caucasian white male police officers, an African American director and his wife, a white district attorney and his wife, a Persian immigrant family, and a Hispanic father whose occupation is a locksmith. The scene chosen from this film involves the police officers (Officer Ryan and Officer Hanson) pulling over the African American Director (Cameron Thayer) and his wife (Christine Thayer) at a traffic stop. This scene establishes two different types of theoretic sociological concepts of Thomas Theorem and cognitive dissonance.

The Movie Crash is valuable in learning about social issues because it points out things that we may tend to ignore in everyday life. It also brings light to things that we may do, but not necessarily consciously realize. Another benefit of this movie portraying social issues like racism is that it helps us think about ourselves as a person and we can analyze ourselves in our way of thinking and our actions. Using a movie in class is also beneficial because it breaks up the traditional classroom activities. It helps student be a little more involved and interested in the topic. Each scene contained both psychological and sociological factors that substantiated his efforts in making the audience aware of the race and gender tensions. This analysis will discuss these psychological and sociological factors of four scenes from the movie Crash. This scene opens up showing a view of a modern day city going about a normal day.

This movie begins by saying “it is the sense of touch…we miss so much that we crash into each other, so we can feel something.” These two words touch and feel had huge meaningful in this movie. The word touch was used to show the connection and feel which conjures a sense of motion. The touch in this movie brings a lot of issues which provides the movie main theme. Before I explore the theme, I will tell my readers what are the themes. The film follows different characters on how their social interaction leads to a chain of different conflicts.

According to K.M. Weiland, a prolific writer of books and audios records states that, “…the beginning of any good story is its hook,” and that “beginnings are the sales pitch for your entire story” (338). Within the first 5 minutes of Crash, this motion picture was able to hook the audience. “The hook comes in many forms, but stripped down to its lowest common denominator, it’s nothing more or less than a question” (Weiland 338). The question that Crash used to hook its audience was by defining the conflict, creating a tone, and establishing a movement within the first few minutes of the movie.
