Throughout this journal, one can predict that David will attempt to find a way to cure Epics of their corrupt nature, and that he will reunite with Megan. Initially, there have been junctures in the book that have pointed to David wanting to figure out how to purify an Epic. An example of one of these junctures is that he wants to be able to help Megan, his love interest and a High Epic, regain her humanity. At the end of the first book in the series, Megan uses her Epic abilities to save David and the Reckoners, and as a result gives into the corruption of her mind that comes with using her powers. From that point onward, David has been searching for a way to save her from her demoralization, as well as simultaneously trying to justify the …show more content…
The fact that these two characters are able to live peacefully with regular humans is proof that it is possible to have a pure Epic. This possibility opens new ideas and opportunities for David, and encourages him to find a way to purify other so that he can make more like them. In addition to Megan and the proven possibility of pure Epics, the idea of using uncorrupted Epics to fight corrupted ones supplies David with another incentive to cure them. Now that the Reckoners have officially waged war against Epics with the slaying of Steelheart, they require more support and power if they hope to win. Although they are a group of skilled assassins, they are also mortal, fragile humans, which gives Epics a distinct advantage. However, if the Reckoners were able to recruit some Epics of their own, it would even the playing field. David contemplates the idea of gaining the help of Epics one night, thinking that “if Newton or Obliteration weren’t under the influence of their powers, would they help us like Edmund
The Book of David discusses how preserving families in some cases can cost the lives of innocent children. Richard J. Gelles was once a prominent defender of family preservation and believed that keeping troubled families together was what was best for the child. However, he changed his mind after he reviewed the tragic case of David Edwards, who was an infant killed by his mother after falling through the gaps of the child welfare system. David had an older sister who was taken from their home after obtaining juries leading to hospitalization. She was later removed from her parents care after they pleaded guilty to child neglect. A month after David’s birth, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards voluntarily terminated their parental rights and a year later, David was killed. Even with the red flags that the Edwards exhibited with the neglect of Marie, did not prompt social workers to monitor the welfare of David. The case of David completely transformed Gelles’s opinion of family preservation and how our child welfare system is fundamentally flawed and has to be changed so other children do not end up like David. He believes that David’s death could have been prevented and that the idea of family preservation should not be applied to every abuse case. Gelles claims that the child welfare system needs to be reformed and that family preservation does not need to be as strictly reinforced to all cases of child abuse or neglect. Throughout the book, Gelles
He used it as a convincing point to allow him to join the Reckoners. David, then went to his apartment to retrieve his ten years’ worth of notes. “Dozens of folders, filled with clippings from newspapers or scraps of information. Eight notebooks filled with my thoughts and findings. A larger notebook with my indexes.” (Sanderson, 57). It was astonishing to see how many notes David had written about Epics. This quote showed me the amount of difficult work and dedication David put into researching about Epics. Although I speculated that David was serious only about Steelheart, it turns out Steelheart is not the only target, as David plans to eliminate all the Epics. When Nightwielder arrived in Diamond’s weapon shop while David, Abraham and Meghan were still there, David’s description of Nightwielder instilled suspense and a little bit of fear in me. “This creature was Steelheart’s right-hand Epic, the source of the darkness that cut Newcago off from the sun and stars. Similar darkness stirred on the ground around him, sliding toward shadows and pooling there. He could kill with that, could make tendrils of that dark mist turn solid and spear a man.” (Sanderson, 103). This made me understand more about who Nightwielder is and why he is a formidable foe. The entire scene became intense since David, Abraham and Meghan knew that if Nightwielder found out they were here, they would not be alive. Following through the story, the Reckoners
I am reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and I am on page 300. This portion of the book is about Louie Zamperini living his WWII days in different POW camps. He has to endure beatings and inhumane conditions. In this journal I will be evaluating and predicting.
At the age of 5 years old, not only did he began to take showers with his father, but when they went to the beach club, his mother bathed him in the shower in the presence of other naked women. By the age of 6 years old, David noticed the power men had over women, “when a male entered the women’s side of the bathhouse, all the women shrieked”. (Gale Biography). At the age of 7 and 8 years old, he experienced a series of head accidents. First, he was hit by a car and suffered head injuries. A few months later he ran into a wall and again suffered head injuries. Then he was hit in the head with a pipe and received a four inch gash in the forehead. Believing his natural mother died while giving birth to him was the source of intense guilt, and anger inside David. His size and appearance did not help matters. He was larger than most kids his age and not particularly attractive, which he was teased by his classmates. His parents were not social people, and David followed in that path, developing a reputation for being a loner. At the age of 14 years old David became very depressed after his adoptive mother Pearl, died from breast cancer. He viewed his mother’s death as a monster plot designed to destroy him. (Gale Biography). He began to fail in school and began an infatuation with petty larceny and pyromania. He sets fires,
“He gave up drinking and smoking.” Louie did exactly this, because he knew the potential he had in running, and wanted to reach that potential. Louie is the main character in the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Almost the whole story revolves around him, and his magnificent life. Louie has grown from being a very troubled young boy, to being a very mature, giving, and humble young man.
I personally believe that there are some partial relations between Ready Player One and the Holocaust. Granted the book is not the exact same context as the Holocaust, based on some things that happened during the Holocaust, Ex. Dehumanization, Killing of Jewish people, etc, I still think there is a partial relationship between the two.
David is a hero that lives in a world of super humans called Epics, that use their powers to harm and oppress rather than do the ideal, which would be to protect others with their abilities. At the beginning of his journey, David was 8 years of age and was happily living in Chicago with his father, the one person in his life that was constant. His call to adventure was when Steelheart attacked the bank on the same day he took over the city.
In Unbroken, by Lauren Hillenbrand the setting plays a significant role. The story starts the childhood of a man named Louie. He grew up with his Italian family in Torrance, California during the 1920s and 30s. He was the middle child and was considered a troublemaker. Because of his behavior, his behavior, his older brother, Pete, made him try out for the track. His performance was amazing and as a result he was allowed to join the team. Everyday he was training with his brother. He won all of yhe local track meets and went on to run in the 1936 olympics in Germany. He ran the 5,000 meter race. Even though he finished in 7th place, he broke the world record for the fastest final lap with 56 seconds. Louie was determined to perform better in the 1940 olympics.
Synthetic, pretend, mock, fake, these are all synonyms to the word virtual. “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline shows the positives and negatives to living entirely in a virtual world. Although there are favorable aspects to developing and nurturing online friendships or even relationships there are fallible aspects as well that seem to outnumber what may appear harmless at first. In this book we are shown 3 different sets of online relationships, that of best friends, a couple and “brothers”. Aech and Wade are the first real relationship shown in this book and they model best friends. These two have been best friends for the past 4 years and have spent countless hours together playing video games, watching movies and just talking. Because
“And we are back! Bottom of the seventh out here in Chesterfield. The score is 7-6, Crushers are winning and the Stix are at their last at bat. It’s about as hot as a chili pepper in August.
Throughout the Chrysalids we see David's heroic attributes. By taking risks to save others and never thinking about how a decision may affect him. In the first few chapters we see David's first act of heroism by the way he protects the less fortunate Sophie from the demanding Alan. David takes the risk of seeing Sophie on a daily basis but making sure to never tell a soul of her minute deviation. When
Matt and I were put into a vault with lots of people who also lived in Boston with us. Matt and I got chosen as runners. The runner's job was to find caps, clothing, food and purified water. We got missions and other jobs from the overseer and other people who needed help. When we were looking for supplies and doing missions we came across two dogs, one that was named Dogmeat and another dog that we named Sparky. Matt and I walk through two big hills and saw lots of big things that we called deathclaws. Deathclaws are really big ugly things that have really big claws. It took a long time to kill these guys because they are really strong and powerful. Good thing we had a mini nuke and a really nice rocket launcher called a fatman.
One day at middle of the night four friend made their way to the abandoned hospital on 7th street and the four friends were Ryland, Manuel aj,and Ashton.
Say hello to the man who will unconsciously compare you to a potato. With his brownish leather jacket, and his many rifles, this guy will have you ducking for cover. Unless his gun explodes, disintegrates, or gets crushed before he can shoot you. David has had quite the experience fighting Epics. He gets up close and personal with them. For example: Dave is usually bait. An example of “personal”: David is dating an Epic. Her name is Megan. His father was killed by an Epic named Steelheart, which David killed and took the skull of. Then, in an elaborate twist, an Epic tricked Prof into using so much power that he became one of the power obsessed Epics. David has been tracking Prof, and stayed in hiding with help from his friends and Megan’s
Throughout the novel, one begins to recognize David’s character as lacking in various areas; lacking courage, morals, ideals. One’s introduction to David at first glance screams “pig.” Lurie’s demeanor is that he is almighty, powerful, and far more in control than any of the women he sleeps with. For instance, page one of chapter one describes David as he marches into Soraya’s room as if it were his own demanding her to remove her clothes as he does his, followed by David saying, “Did you miss me?” (Coetzee 1999). And not in an emotional way but, purely regarding his sexual desires versus hers. This same behavior carries on to his encounters with Melanie, the student.
