My duties include pricing plans and setting insurance premiums for our potential clients. Castor Collins was approached by two companies looking for employer insurance and both companies have a set rate their employees are able to pay for premiums since both groups will have to pay for his or her own insurance (Axia College, 2006). Health Concerns In our investigation of the health demographics in Constructit we discovered the following health concerns. Almost half of the employees are obese, 198 men and 192 women which adds up to 39% of the workforce which in itself is a major concern. Obesity can cause High Cholesterol the second highest medical condition within this group meaning 19%, 101 men and 95 women. As well as high blood pressure is another cause of health concern with 88 men and 105 women, 19% of the workforce (Axia College, 2006). We also discovered many suffer from an allergy which affects 92 men and 85 women 17% overall. Many of the employees suffer from migraines 16%, 75 men and 93 women. Although only 13% of the employees 78 men and 57 women Respiratory Diseases is still a cause of concern. The Last medical condition we discover was digestive disorders at 8% 52 men and 32 women. Now our task was to develop a plan and stay within our $4000 premium limit (Axia College, 2006). Plans Here at Castor Collins we have two plans that could possibly fit the needs of Constructit. One is Castor Standard which does not cover preexisting medical conditions and the other is Castor Enhanced which does cover preexisting medical conditions. At 2012, the population of the workforce in the United States was estimated by the U.S. civilian labor force as 155 million workers. Having a stable job can contribute positively to that individual’s physical and psychological health. However, work environment can be a source of many hazardous issues that may lead to work-related injuries or illnesses, which may be fatal and in many cases nonfatal. On the other hand, occupational injuries can have a negative effect on the United States’ economy; it is estimated that nonfatal injuries can cost the economy approximately $200 billion annually, while fatal injuries are estimated to cost $6 billion annually. Managing these issues is an important task which could be approached in many different ways. Dealing with the issues helps in the protection of workers, not to mention it can decrease the losses to the economy associated with this matter. An example of prevention efforts, is the CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report (CHDIR), which assess disparities across a wide range of diseases, behavior risk factors, environmental exposures, social determinants, and health-care access. For this weeks assignment I choose to show the option I was given from my employer. There are two plans offered once a year one plan is called the Enhanced Plan and the other called the Core Plan. Health in the United States has become a serious issue. With about six in every 10 people suffering from either being overweight or obese in addition to other unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, heavy drinking or lack of exercise. These lifestyle choices have caused a number of chronic illnesses to skyrocket to high rates. “These chronic conditions have become a major burden, as they lead to decreased quality of life, premature death and disability, and increased health care cost” (pg xiii). What the workplace is trying to do is promote a healthier lifestyle for the employee. Some reasons for doing so is that the employer cares about the well being of their employee so that they can be more productive and to help reduce the risk of getting a chronic disease. Since these chronic diseases are becoming more life threatening and the cost of health care is increasing the employers are implementing health promotion and disease prevention strategies also known as workplace wellness programs. “Workplace wellness takes advantages of employers’ access to employees at an age when interventions can still change their long-term health trajectory. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act supports this trend with several provisions regarding health promotion and also mandated this study” (pg xiii).

The continuous rise of health care costs has meant many companies turning toward health and wellness as a potential solution to save money: ‘research is showing that it’s more cost-effective to invest in preventive health practices, such as screenings, immunizations, health risk appraisals, behavioral coaching, and health awareness/education [and] best-practice research is demonstrating the total value of an integrated, population-based strategy that addresses the health needs of all employees, dependents, and retirees across the health care continuum’ (U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 2009). Employers should balance providing wellness initiatives that address both lifestyle risk factors (such as physical activity, nutrition and stress) and clinical risk factors (such as obesity, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels). Both of these types of risk factors can be tied to the workplace environment, and both types of risk factors can be positively impacted with an environment that supports health and wellness. Top risk factors like physical activity and nutrition can be greatly supported by improving workplace environments to supplement the programming tied to these initiatives.

Drennan and Richey consider “the efforts to persuade employees to adopt healthier lifestyles have largely failed due to great societal pressure. Long commutes, long work hours, convenience of fast food, single parents trying to make ends meet, living alone and lack of social support all contribute to poor eating and exercise habits.” (Drennan & Richey 2003). Indeed, many employees suffer excessive weight, and lack of flexibility and strength, while employers continue to suffer the losses, either in workers compensation or healthcare costs. Workplace wellness is defined as any workplace health promotion activity or organizational policy designed to support healthy behavior in the workplace and to improve health outcomes (Workplace Wellness, 2014). Worksite wellness programs began in the eighties across the United States and other countries to curtail the increase of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among the population. CVD is a condition that occurs when cholesterol builds up in the arteries restricting blood flow to the heart. CVD can lead to a heart attack if left untreated. Risk factors associated with CVD include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, obesity, smoking, stress, diabetes and leading a sedentary lifestyle. Decreasing these risk factors can significantly lower chances of developing a heart attack.
