The Seven Years War, or sometimes referred to as the French and Indian war, took place in the year 1754 and finally came to a conclusion in 1763, just prior to the American Revolution. The French and Indian war is often a war that’s importance is overlooked throughout the history of America. The French and Indian war set the stage for the George Washington to become the most important American figure in history. The events and battles of the Seven Years War would lead the colonist to helping the British defeat the French and their counterparts, the Native Americans.      The Seven Years War proved to be a crossroads in the history of British colonial rule in America. Britain was victorious, but after defeating her French foes (along with their Indian allies), Britain was left to contemplate the ramifications of a war that would leave her relationship with her American colonies altered forever. This change would eventually lead to conflict between the colonies and Britain, and ultimately the Declaration of American Independence.

The biggest reason that colonists were becoming disgruntled with their mother country, Britain, was Britain’s heavy debts that Britain had accumulated while fighting wars with France which needed to be alleviated. As with all governments, Britain had to tax its people to procure the funds needed to pay these debts. Britain saw their colonies as thousands of British citizens that they had not taxed satisfactorily. After realizing this, Britain imposed several new taxes on goods imported and exported to and from the colonies. The colonists were livid over the new taxes. After all, Britain had practiced salutary neglect for almost 100 years. Salutary neglect is the practice of leaving one’s foreign acquisitions to their own devices with little to no interference of their government, social, or economic aspects. The colonists immediately began to petition these new taxes. Their logic: “No taxation without representation.”

The Seven Years’ War, also known as the French and Indian War in the colonies, was the beginning of outward conflict between the British and French over North American colonies. Most Europeans viewed the Indians as a means to get something they wanted; they were pawns during this struggle in North America. During the 18th century, there were many alliances and discord among the Indians and the Europeans. The demise of many alliances was the lack of trust and suspicions of betrayal. The Europeans were a dominating force in the French and Indian War affecting aspects of territory, trade, and government in North America.

Salutary Neglect- Between 1690 and 1760, the colonist went to little problems from the British. Salutary Neglect was an idea which could be beneficial to the colonies. The concept of this idea was that America could experience self-government and people could make their own rules. The Salutary Neglect make the colonies violate the Navigation Act and allowed the colonies to feel being independent. The colonies had their own legislatures which made their own laws.

The war had a profound result with the British having rule of North America. The Seven Years War ended with the French signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763. French territory, New France had ceased to exist, the British gained control of the lands that extended from Canada to Florida with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

Since the first civilization Jamestown, the colonists slowly adapted and improved the environment of the land and gained more and more people due to the rapid overpopulation in England. But as the more advanced and smarter the people got. They began to import and export goods to other countries as a growing country, the British began to levy all kinds of trade regulation and taxes, all to stop the aid it was giving to other world power country that British was enemy and the selfish greed British had to only be the one gaining from the colonist. Therefore causing unsettling feelings of the colonies towards them, as they felt they are been treated unfairly and taking away what they felt is their own right and own money.

The American Revolution was far from being the first conflict to occur on the soil of the New World. There were multiple skirmishes, battles, and official wars fought in the territory that resulted in severe bloodshed before the idea of the American Revolution was even conceived. One of the most significant of these wars was the French and Indian War or as it was known in Europe, the Seven Years’ War. At its conclusion in 1763, the Treaty of Paris was signed. The English received a substantial amount of new land for the Empire (94). However, with the acquisition of new land and a significant amount of debt from the extensive war efforts, the British government had to reevaluate many of their policies (95-96). After the Treaty of Paris of 1763, the British were confident in their mastery of North America. However by attempting to tighten their control over their American colonies they initiated a series of poorly thought out programs and policies which resulted in a disastrous rebellion.

Britain created a lot of policies to keep the colonies under their rule. They also had these policies in place because it benefited their own economy. American colonies would give Britain supplies, and they would use these supplies to manufacture for a profit. The Navigation Acts were created so that trade would be more regulated.

Throughout the course of mankind, wars were raged on different continents. During this extended period of time, roughly four thousand years, there have been two wars labeled as “World Wars.” However, with research and expanded knowledge, there should at least be three “world wars,” and have the names altered to fit the criteria of such. This added war is known as: The Seven Years War. Despite misguiding evidence, and different historical accounts, the war can either be placed to have originated in 1754 or 1756, but an agreeable ending in the year 1763 can at least help identify this war efficiently. The Seven Years War, also known in the United States as the French and Indian War, should have been more prominently named the First World War because it was fought on a front of four different continents: North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The ability to have a war waged on more than three continents or four continents to be clear, despite not having a set definition, should able to be classified as being a World War.

The French and Indian was a turning point in the American Revolution, and involved various countries around the globe. Many changes in the political lifestyle helped changed the colonies immensely. America wanted its independence more than ever after events that sparked a great shift between the 13 colonies and its mother country. Economic affairs were increasing because of the war and the need for products that the Americans were able to produce. The idea of wanting its independence from Britain was forced upon them after the French and Indian War when Americans felt that they were receiving unfair treatment from Great Britain. This war represented an important moment in the history of the United States, despite the fact that the actual confrontation and the political disputes had included the French and the British. Although the political matters were related to the colonial issues the two sides had on the European continent, the major battlefield in this sense were disputed in the American colonies. It marked a crucial point in the creation of the United States and in defining the territorial identity of the country.
