Social Networking: Negative Impact on Society, Especially the Youth Social networking sites allow you to connect with old friends from high school, family that lives far away, in my case, even in another country as missionaries, friends down the street, coworkers, and just about anyone else you can think of. This can make you feel more connected to the world around you. You can keep up with what everyone is doing and accomplishing in their lives very easily through statuses and pictures posted every day. I have met new family members, whether by marriage or by birth, through Facebook who I otherwise have not had the opportunity to meet. One of my uncles, who recently passed away, had an affair about thirty years ago and did not …show more content…
They could have an alterior motive such as stalking or even bullying you, which leads to my next issue. Cyber bullying is becoming a bigger and bigger problem on social networking sites. There have been quite a few teenage suicides in which cyber bullying seems to have played a role. In at least one case, the suicide of Alexis Pilkington, the bullying kept going on her tribute page even after her death. (Glor) “Cyber-Bullying can cause the victim to become chronically depressed and to experience a complete loss of self-esteem. A short exposure to Cyber-Bullying can have long term effects. It can result in Cyber-Bullying Suicides.” (Cyber-Bullying Suicides - Cyber Bullycide Victims ) It has many forms such as degradation, harassment, cyber stalking, impersonation, flaming (using vulgar and angry language to start fights with the victim), password theft and hacking accounts, posting photos or videos, among several others. (Cyber-Bullying Suicides - Cyber Bullycide Victims ) Bullying has been around way before the internet, but now that it is online, rumors, pictures or other forms of cyber bullying make their way around the community much faster so it is easier to humiliate someone in front of more people. “In the Internet era, it appears there are more people interested in spewing hate than in countering it. On the social networking sites and on YouTube, inflammatory, hate-filled content overwhelms the limited efforts to
According to Bulent Dilmac, “bullying is defined as aggression with the intention of hurting (Kepenekci & Çınkır, 2003) and is an anti-social form of behavior that produces negative consequences (Taylor, 2006).” “Cyberbullying is defined as the repetitive use of information and communication technologies by an individual or a group in order to hurt other individuals. (Akbaba & Eroǧlu, 2013).” There have been several cases where cyberbullying causes teenagers to take their own life’s (commit suicide). It can cause individuals to suppress negative emotions within them. Lowering their self-esteem and looking at life with a sense of hopelessness. Jessica Laney was a victim of cyberbullying when she was insulted on social media.
Cyber-bullying is a very well-known, yet untouched issue that thrives within the age of technology. As it remains untouched and "acknowledged" by the striving online communities, negative cyberspace behavior increases. It gets to the point where this behavior is so frequent, there had been instances of a victim's suicide, supposedly caused by people on the Internet, who are classed as cyber-bullies. Cyber-bullies should be held criminally responsible for a victim's suicide because they are breaking the law, using the web to their advantage, and if they are not held criminally responsible, chances are that the problem will continue.
People who are involved in this or have started a conflict with someone over the internet are called cyber bullies. Cyber bullies harass teens and kids online by saying rude or nasty things about them. Three out of four cyber bullies do this to feel powerful and the other one fourth say that they do it for fun. The bullies start rumors about their victims and if their victim posts a bad or inappropriate picture then the bully will pounce on the chance to make their life hell. Sometimes the bully will get other people or students to join in on the harassment, just making things two times worse. The bullies do not care how bad their victim’s life is. This has caused suicide and some of the bullies will still say that they do not care or that they “deserved it” . In the United States, 42% of teens and kids have been cyberbullied and one in every four have had it happen more than once in their lives. “21% of victims have received threatening e-mails or messages online or over text”(Scholastic).
Cyberbullying is one of the many factors for a teen to commit suicide. Cyberbullying is the use of the internet to send harm to another person. It is a way of bullying that happens anonymously through the internet. “While cyberbullying alone is not likely to lead to youth suicide, it may worsen feelings of hopelessness in adolescents struggling with stress in their lives” (Hinduja, Sameer, and Patchin). Cyberbullying can easily be started by just making fun of someone and continuing to something more serious. People think that making a joke online is funny, but little do they know it can really affect someone. As teens, we do not fully think before typing something online and what seems like no big deal to someone, can be a breaking point for someone else. There are many movies that talk about cyberbullying and it is suppose to spread awareness about this kind of bullying. When cyberbullying became a big deal, everyone started doing something to stop it, and it is still around today but not many people are paying attention to it anymore. Most likely the suspect will harass and will continue harassing the victim till they have reached their breaking point. People bully online to make other’s feel less then they really are (Phillips). They may use hurtful words or even just
Cyberbullying is a very depressing thing that can happen to a person. In an article, “Baby Rape Sparks Outrage”, Sameer Hinduja, states that “1-in-3 children say they are cyberbullied, and about 12 percent say they have bullied others online”, (The Press Democrat). Imagine if a family member comes home depressed and is scared to tell someone what is happening to them. It may be that they got bullied at school or on the internet but can not get help. If a student gets bullied and can not get help it will eventually lead them to think about suicide, since they can not get everything off of their chest. There are not many laws on cyber bullying, which means that this social activity is allowed. Anyone can open up any type of social media and start rumors or even make fun of anybody. In the article, two- twelve-year old were cyber bullying a female classmate. They wrote on the internet rumors that their classmate had a sexually transmitted disease, which was not true. Not only that but also called her names and even wrote threats to expose personal information. Unfortunately, the bullied twelve years old ended up hanging herself and the bullies were arrested. This article is devastating because there are people out there who will put a person down and the victim ends up committing suicide is very heartbreaking. Assume this was a close friend or even family member such as sister, brother, cousin and so on, does this not make humans think about their actions before committing them. If the intentions were something else like getting attention, then make sure that the person knows what will be posted online because they may not want to deal with social media. This shows that society can make a human evil. Just by being a part of a group who is constantly putting others down or hang out with the wrong people can lead to a change in
This issue has now received much attention from the media, especially as it relates to increased suicide rates (Campbell, 2005 & Dooley et al., 2009). To date, there has really not been as much research on this topic because advances regarding technology, which is imperative to cyberbullying, are relatively recent as compared to the traditional bullying. Traditional bullying has been occurring for very many years, and has been studied more in depth. Additionally, the whole topic of bullying has been thought of as something that was not much of a problem until rather recently (Campbell,
Bullying is on facebook, twitter, tumbler, any social media page you can think off bullying is on it. In 2009 jennifer pozner said she was dealing with cyberbullying. A guy was bullying her everyday for 3 months she killed herself 4 months later, she couldn't handle it any more. He went to court for manslaughter and was sentenced to 9 years. Some people can't handle it and they just breakdown and want to take their own life.
As social creatures, we live for connection. Social networking tends to strengthen your relationships with people you already know, increase your self-disclosure, and reveal your true personality. Social networking influences my health-related behaviors a lot, especially my phone. It is like a necessary
Before cyberbullying began happening, bullying was not a new concept. It was a thing that many children went through for most of their lives if not all of their lives. Ever since the internet has been introduced to the world, it has taken the game of bullying to a completely different level. The internet has given people all around the globe the advantage of putting on a “mask” and namelessly abhorring on other individuals for their own entertainment. Cyberbullying has negative effects on victims, such as lowering self-esteem, increasing depression and producing feelings of powerlessness (Anderson, Bresnahan, & Musatics, 2014). Cyberbullying can happen because of someone 's race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and even their hobbies. Over the past several years, the spike in suicides among teens that have been the result of online threats, rumors, and hurtful communications has brought national attention to the issue of the people’s use of electronic media to bully other people. It is preposterous that it takes suicide for people to notice that people are suffering because of people who feel the need to make someone hate themselves. On every social media website you visit, rude comments will viciously pop up no matter which site you go on. Those horrid posts are not necessary, but are put online for the amusement of people and are not necessarily viewed as extreme until the life of a person is taken into their own hands. Cyberbullying effectively ruins the lives of
Bullies are no longer just stuffing you in lockers and following you home on bikes, they have moved on to the world wide web. Cyberbullying has spread all over the internet, in most cases it has caused young teens to commit suicide. According to Yale University, bullied victims are 7-9% more likely to commit suicide. A lot of kids who are cyberbullied get picked on at school then go home and continue to be harassed. They usually don’t seek help because they want to keep their internet privileges. Overtime they continue to endure that pain and either talk to someone about it or take their own life.
A lot of people think cyberbullying is just face-to-face. They think things are just said when people are in public, but that’s not the case at all. Cyberbullying has been around for a lengthy period. It can be very devastating for victims. It’s gotten so bad that people now commit suicide. A lot of people don’t understand how serious cyberbullying is, or any kind of bullying. Kids are out there getting bullied every day, just because the way they look, talk, or what they simply believe in. It’s not fair at all. I feel like a lot of parents don’t see it, or maybe they try and overlook it. I had saw on Google that it was the cause of about 6,078 deaths in a year in the 15 to 24 age group. That is a lot of deaths all over bullying. Bullied victims are 7 to 9 per cent more likely to consider suicide according to a study by Yale University. I’ve been reading many different articles that I have found quite interesting. In this first article “McKinney Teen’s Family Says Relentless Bullying Led to His Suicide,” a little boy named Junior left his family a note on the table saying he would be back soon, and that he was going for a walk. Soon after he killed himself with a gun he borrowed from a friend, just so he could protect his family from the students at McKinney Boyd High School.
Cyberbullying has been more popular now than ever with many children and teens affected by it worldwide. Cyberbullying is permanent, and nothing can be done to erase the damage. About 4,500 people per year commit suicide as a result of bullying. Using electronic devices, bullies can threaten victims with hurtful messages, which can also provoke many insecurities. According to studies, “more than one in three young people have experienced cyberthreats online” (“Cyberbullying Statistics”). This research shows that bullying may harm countless people under the age of eighteen who use the media. The results of cyberbullying can have negative impacts on people of all ages throughout their lives and leading to rash decisions and suicide.
Cyberbullying is growing and becoming one of the leading causes of teen suicide. Cyberbullying occurs when a person posts or messages someone in a negative way online. It can include threats, harassment, and even smearing someone’s name by spreading lies. The web’s anonymity provides the perfect cover for bullies to harass classmates or even mere strangers. Cyberbullying is usually not a hit and run, bullies target one teen and insult or spread rumors about them, not realizing that if caught, they are setting themselves up for criminal charges. Also, many bullies do not understand the effects their actions have on the victim, and how significant they are. Cyberbullying is a severe form of psychological abuse, and it can lead to short and
Another type of bullying that is a bit worse is cyber bulling, this type of bullying takes place on social media such as, Instagram, snapchat, and Facebook. Cyber bulling can also be putting another down because of the way a person is but it can also be much worse for the fact that is so easy for people to be a bystander and also it’s even easier for someone to join in on the action. Many of the websites that we have nowadays allows a user to be anonymous and keep a bully’s tracks covered up pretty well. It is upsetting to see that people get joy out of doing this to other individuals because this can also be the cause of people committing suicide.
Its also a great way to meet people and be influenced by good people that can help and guide you places. It has not ever been easier to make friends than it is right now, mainly because of social networking sites. Just a few generations ago, it was pretty hard to connect with people, unless you were the really outgoing type that can make conversation with anyone at a party or get together.
