As mentioned before, my chosen policy priority is childhood obesity, an epidemic with many health issues associated with it. According to Burns, Grove, and Gray (2011), research used as evidence- based practice (EBP) has been implemented in the clinical practice to achieve quality care, efficiency, and positive outcome for patients and healthcare organizations. Furthermore, when EBP is applied to clinical practice it provides description, explanation, prediction and the control of phenomena. To this, Saviñon, Taylor, Canty-Mitchell, and Blood-Siegfried (2012) suggested that nurses can advocate for the children by encouraging parents to provide children with a variety of foods in adequate amounts to support growth and energy play. Furthermore,
Pressure ulcers occur over bony prominences when skin is compressed for long periods of time, affecting the blood supply to certain areas, leading to ischaemia development (Waugh and Grant, 2001). Compression of skin is caused by pressure, shearing and friction, but can also occur due to pressure exerted by medical equipment (Randle, Coffey and Bradbury, 2009). NICE (2014) states that the prevalence of pressure ulcers in different healthcare settings in December 2013 was 4.7%, taken from data available for 186,000 patients. The cost of treating ulcers can vary depending on severity from £43 up to £374 (NICE, 2014). Evidence based practice skills are essential in nursing as it allows the best available evidence to be used to improve practice and patient care, while improving decision-making (Holland and Rees, 2010). I will be critiquing two research papers; qualitative and quantitative, using a framework set out by Holland and Rees (2010), and will explore the impact on practice. Using a framework provides a standardised method of assessing quality and reduces subjectivity.
Today, we are continually striving to improve the quality of care that we deliver and the best method in applying relevant research into clinical practice are through evidence based practice (EBP). We have now come to a time in our careers to shift our direction on how to employ evidence based practice techniques when managing our patient's health care needs. Facilitation is a method that has been investigated as a way to help clinicians accomplish the implementation of evidence into practice. As clinicians, we are encouraged to think outside the box and utilize critical thinking skills as well as express our role as nurses as part of the health care team.
In healthcare, evidence based practice (EBP) has grown and become important in providing the best quality care possible to patients. There are numerous ways to collect and use the research in the nursing profession. Studies are constantly being done to help better nursing and all of the healthcare field in order to help patients live better and maintain their health. There are different types of research such as qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative uses the human experience or something that has been lived by someone and quantitative examines for meaning and goes more in depth to research things and strives to test a hypothesis or makes use of statistical data to answer research questions (LoBiondo-Wood
Applying evidenced-based practice has three steps. Step one is making sure the research is creditable. Going into detail about step one should model a social work practice. In a social work practice, you always want to make sure you are looking for clarity and in some cases it helps to paraphrase it or reword it differently. As a social worker you have to be non-judgmental and try to understand every perspective. You have to be unbiased when it comes to wording and how it affects the meaning of the conversation. Also, making sure the research on the surveys or interviews are fair and represent the entire population. The second step is when you match your outcome of the research in your own “practice wisdom." As a social worker you want to compare the research you made with prior experience. You want to have different perspective and information that help you understand the client better. Lastly, the last step is to ask questions to the clients about their significance of what they have accomplished by working with you. Just asking what the client has learned can help
In our research, we have compared three very different tools for ranking evidence based practice methods. Each of these tools could be effectively utilized in any healthcare facility or healthcare organization.
Using evidenced based practice in nursing care has been found to improve nursing care and patient outcomes for that matter. Though nurses are gradually embracing the use of evidenced based practice, we still have more to do to achieve EBP across the board. Studies have shown increase in responsiveness and attitude to EBP but are still faced by significant barriers in employing it. Therefore what we think and believe is not what is practiced (Stevens, 2013).
The use of Evidenced-Based Practice (EBP) is required by universities throughout Undergraduate programs in Communication Science-Disorders, Graduate programs in Masters of Arts or Science in Speech-Language Pathology, and during Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. The implementation of EBP in all my assignments significantly increased during my first semester in the Masters of Arts program for Speech-Language Pathology at Lehman College. During the use of EBP for assignments, I have relayed on my clinical judgment to question: the methodologies, how and why certain groups were selected, the author/s’ purpose for writing the article, the most valuable piece of information, the inferences and conclusions, and how it will impact the field of speech-language pathology. I also used evidence-based research while writing reports and justifications for therapy techniques and goals; during the search for articles I had to consider how it would impact the client and his/her family, as well as the meaning it would add to the therapy session. Moreover, I encountered acronyms and new vocabulary that are currently being used in the field such as MGRs- Mental Graphemic Representations, and tDCS- transcranial Direct Current
An evidence based practice, in my opinion, is the care provided to the patients based on the best evidences derived from the research. According to Hickson et.el (2013) an evidence based practice (EBP) is “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients”. This definition recognizes three foundations of EBP such as the research evidence, expertness of the clinician and the client’s preferences and goals (Hickson, Laplante-Lévesque, & Wong, 2013).
Evidence Based Practice is primarily describing as a process that integrates available research with a practitioner that will relate to the clients’ needs. (Parrish, 2011) The process entitles five steps that explains how the single system works. Begin by coming with practice questions that can be answered. Then find something research for the practice questions. After your finding, next review any research that you have found. Then take the research that you found and collaborate it with your practitioner to relate to your client’s needs. Lastly, keep a record of outcomes to study if the treatment working. (Parrish,
Shirey, et al, (2011) did an excellent job breaking down the differences between Quality Improvement (QI), Evidenced Based Practice (EBP) and Research. The terms QI, EBP and research are often erroneously used interchangeably. Frequently it seems as if nurses don't know which method to use to address the practice problems they are trying to solve. As someone, who is responsible for implementing QI projects on a regular basis and has also mentored nurses in doing both EBP and research, I found the clarity of the descriptions enlightening, an addition to my knowledge base and will also help me in my practice. The description used of a three-legged stool where QI, EBP and research as the legs all play an integral, yet individual, parts in
The unique feature of evidence-based practice is the effective it has on psychological symptoms. Dr. Norcross noted that evidence-based practice when put in clinical knowledge, encompasses the patients characteristics, culture and client's preferences to enhance the application of psychotherapy.
According to CLPNA (2005), “nurses should ddemonstrate knowledge of the elements and impact of nursing research and evidence-based practice such as improved quality of practice and changes to practice based on new data. This competency is crucial for the professionalism in nursing practice”.
Evidence-based clinical practice or evidence-based medicine is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients” (Sackett et al., 1996). The beginning of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), formerly known as evidence-based medicine, was initiated by Archie Cochrane in the 1970’s. Cochrane discovered that when many methods of research start developing revealed as main findings that the clinicians were making decisions about patient’s care from practices commonly used for similar illnesses (Mackey and Bassendowski, 2017). Cochrane considered that randomised controlled trials represented a reliable form of evidence that can provide with more valid information that initiated
An evidence-based practice is an essential for the health science students where they have to study a research paper and have to critique on that research article to evaluate the usefulness of the study by comparing it to other papers. The critical appraisal is a systematic and structural way through which the limitation and the strength researching studies are appraised and also established clinical relevant (Porritt et al., 2014 as cited in Borbasi & Jackson, 2016). This paper will focus about the resilience that refers to the capacity of the individual to bounce back from adversities, persevere through negative times (Harker, Pidgeon, Klassen & king, 2016). This paper will discuss about the authorship, research questions, research design,
Practicing the current evidence-based and research will help nurses to deliver care to their patients. And nurses should apply evidence-based nursing practice in their practices. For instance, during the simulation practice, nursing students elevated the patient’s bed in sim-flower position to increase the o2 saturation level of the patient. Thus, they followed the evidence-based practice to increase the o2 saturation level of the patients and patient benefits from the practice.
