In the film The Power of the Situation researchers analyze why, when influenced by others, people act accordingly or strangely. Ellen Langer, a psychologist who graduated from Harvard University, conducted an experiment. Ellen took young air force ROTC cadets and performed a standard vision accuracy test that would normally be administered by eye doctors when testing the eyes for vision impairments. Each subject in the experiment showed a slight vision impairment that can make it difficult to read numbers and letters from a distance. After the subjects were tested half of the subjects were put into a flight simulator and they got to wear air force flight suits, making them look and feel like they are an important role of the air force, while
In the reading, Violence in Movies: Cinematic Craft or Hollywood Gone Too Far?, the response that states "Point: Hollywood, Stop Exposing Our Kids to Violence" is more persuasive than "Counterpoint: Hollywood Filmmakers Should Not be Villainized for Movie Violence" because it provides better-supported facts that are reliable and credible. The "Point" response explains how violence in movies has become very excessive and is allowing children to act out and think it is okay because of what they see on TV. While, the "Counterpoint" response explains how Hollywood filmmakers should not be punished for their creative writing and that parents should monitor their kids and decide whether or not they should be watching it.
While writing "The Power of The Situation" Lee Ross and Richard E. Nisbett explains, there are no indicators on a persons reaction given a certain situation ( 149). Ross and Nisbett continue to say, a person 's past cannot determine how a human 's actions will take place in a future scenario, even if the human has a kind heart, they may not always be willing to help a person in need. Leading into this Ross and Nisbett state, " Social Psychology has by now amassed a vast store of such empirical parables" (Ross and Nisbett 149). Many people believe a past of a person will help them to identify or interpret how a person will act; However, Ross and Nisbett believe for this to be a fundamental attribution error (149). The power of a situation causes people to act in ways they may not have ever dreamed of, for instance The My Lai Massacre. "The My Lai Massacre: A military Crime of Obedience" written by, Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton consists of a small series of crimes committed by our own military ( Kelman and Hamilton 131). During the massacre military soldiers were humiliating and dehumanizing the enemies simply because their leading officer commanded them to do so (140-141). As their once simple actions became an everyday routine, the soldiers never questioned the unjust commands given by the authority (140). Dawson and Downey followed the orders given by their superior in command without a hesitation to stop and think whether or not the actions soon to be taken were
The film, “the Power of One,” followed the life of a boy named P.K. from a small child to a handsome young man. It showed all the hardship and tragedy he had to endure throughout his life. Although the movie could have focused more on the apartheid, it instead portrayed the vulgarity of those times through the eyes of an English boy. As time went on, P.K. slowly began to realize the full severity of the apartheid. It was difficult for a child to comprehend how horribly people could treat one another for no apparent reason.
One important scene in the film ‘The Age of Aids’ is “Port Au Prince, Haiti”. In this scene it outlines the conditions in Haiti, which were very poor and it turn left the city defenseless against the new disease. In 70’s and 80’s the disease began to be seen by doctors and priests who were being sought after to cure a unseen disease which left the people with the “look of death, [making them] so skinny you could see their bones”. The scene then goes on to take a look at one of the first HIV clinics in Port Au Prince, which was opened in the roughest parts of town. One of the surprising things that this clinic found when they were looking at the patients coming in was that the mean they were analyzing had more
Have you ever endured an adversity in life? How did you progress through it? Was it the music that motivated you, a quote that inspired you, or a film that opened up your eyes to another world you never thought was possible? Through my diverse voice I would hook my audience by dedicating the film to people facing the same hardship the main character is enduring. For instance, in one of my screenplays entitled, “The Secret of the 1%” I would dedicate the film to the handworker that stays up all hours of the night to finish their work. Conversely if they cannot relate to the film through the line of dedication, I would try to inspire them throughout the movie. In the film entitled, “Against My Parent’s Will” if it were allowed I would play
Looking further at the conventions of Classical and Art cinema in the movie The Graduate, it becomes quite evident that there are elements of both Classical Hollywood cinema and Art cinema in the film. The movie begins with college graduate Benjamin Braddock, coming back home after finishing his studies at university. At his graduation party, Benjamin is bombarded by family and friends with questions concerning his future. Eventually, he retreats to his room for a moment’s silence. Mrs. Robinson then makes an introduction, and asks Benjamin to drive her home.
Auteurism is a term first coined by Francois Truffaut to describe the mark of a film director on his films. A director can be considered an auteur if about five of his film depict a certain style that is definitely his own. In other words, much like one can look at a painting and tell if it is a Monet, a Renoir, or a Degas, if a film director is an auteur, one can look at his film and tell by style and recurring themes that it was made by a certain director. In auteur films, the director is many times what brings an audience to the theater, instead of the actors or storyline. I am going to take a look at three of the most noted auteurs: Frederico Fellini, Satyajit Ray, and Alfred Hitchcock.
The Interpersonal conflict in this film is the same as in most of our daily lifestyles as humans. There are many times in life when things that people say are taken out of context and or control and you wish that you could play it off as if it was never even said. There were so many instances of conflict in this film that I couldn’t only choose from just one. After watching this great and funny film, I learned that I need to be careful of what is said. Also how it is said to avoid escalating any incident you may have in an active relationship with a loved one or even just a good friend. When handling an interpersonal conflict in any stage of a relationship, handle yourself in the same way that you want
The world of film has changed dramatically over the years and will likely continue to change along with technological and professional developments. Like many modern innovations, film has changed substantially over a rather short period of time, from black and white movies to modernized color films. Still, it is impressive to think how far film has come, and looking back into the near past affords an appreciation of the technology that no longer exists. Thus my viewing experiences towards film have tremendously changed in recent years as I have become more and more immersed in its world.
The movie I chose to watch is Courageous. The precipitating event in this movie is the car accident that takes the life of Emily Mitchell. Her father, Adam Mitchell, and the rest of her family are traumatized by the sudden death of their 9 year old daughter/sister. In thinking about information that would be gained in the first contact with Adam Mitchell, one thing that stands out about his previous state of mind/functioning is that he was somewhat uninvolved with his children, taking them for granted. This fact can also be a trigger for how he processes this event, causing a crisis for him as he realized his
Released in 1988 by director Giuseppe Tomatore, “Cinema Paradiso” follows the life of a young boy in Italy who dreams of being a filmmaker. The road the boy, who eventually becomes a famous Italian film director named Salvatore Di Vita, takes to reach his goal is difficult and includes many sacrifices and trade-offs. Today, the film is widely regarded as one of the most popular foreign films ever to be released in the United States. Given that foreign films are fairly common in America, it is fair to consider why “Cinema Paradiso” received such critical acclaim, as well as relative mainstream popularity. “Cinema Paradiso” received critical and popular praise because the film includes several timeless themes
I am stripped apart, and even this great Italian meal will not cover the stringy muscles of my heart.
There are multitude of ways that historical and social context can be reflected in film. A popular trend in the film industry is to make movies of historical events that had an impact on the world, like movies on different wars such as Saving Private Ryan or culturally significant events such as slavery. Writers will even take the history of a different country or former empire and make their own story. Film makers will also make various movies and documentaries of social events that are going on in present day or have taken place recently such as Alive Inside. Historical and social context can also be reflected in the production of a film. People involved in making films are always looking for ways to make the movie they are creating have
Beginning at a very young age in our lives, the film industry influences the way in which each individual interprets the actions that are taken by a character in a film. The constant portrayal of what characteristics would best fit with defining what it is to be a hero, seem to focus mainly on masculine traits. The desirable traits that are illustrated in the majority of the films are being independent, strong, and most importantly a male. However, the film Maleficent (2014), contradicts this idea. This film tells the story of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), a young woman that has been fooled into believing in true love. When the person she believed was her true love, removes her most precious weapon she is left with great agony and a thirst for
a powerful weapon, and that was the weapon of being inferior to a race that had
