George Washington Military Life Essay

The revered and respected first president, George Washington, gave the US hope during one of its most difficult times. Using the events and circumstances of his life to learn and advance his position, he grew from humble beginnings into a legend. George Washington had a valuable, well-rounded education from ages seven to fifteen, studying all the subjects (Nevins and Graff). Due to his father’s death, George grew up under the supervision of his half-brother Lawrence at Mount Vernon, learning many lessons and developing thoughts, actions, and manners he used later in life (Nevins and Graff). He worked as a surveyor for his first career and learned the benefits of hard work, endurance, and resourcefulness (Nevins and Graff). After Lawrence died, George took over running the family plantation and found farming an honorable, delectable, amusing, and profitable occupation (Nevins and Graff). Standing six feet tall with broad shoulders, Washington cultivated a lavish lifestyle of dancing, cards, billiards, and hunting as a prominent and active member in his community and church (Nevins and Graff). George Washington started his military career in November of 1752, and in 1755 he took the position as commander of all the Virginian troops at the young age of 23 years (Nevins and Graff). Washington desired more honor and respect than he received, so he resigned from the military in the fall of 1758 full of frustration (Nevins and Graff). Regarded as one of the most beloved figures in American history, George Washington maintains an almost godlike image in the minds of many. Despite his reputation as a leader, Washington was not always flawless in his military exploits. His time in the French and Indian War granted him the experiences and skills needed to be effective as commander of the Continental Army, and not all of these experiences included victories. It was the knowledge Washington gained in the French and Indian War, and the war itself, that helped the colonies to obtain their independence from Great Britain.

The colonies decided to elect a president on the year 1789.  Washington was the first choice for president.  During the American Revolution , he was one of the best generals. For example, he was usually fighting along with his soldiers, not just giving orders. Also, Washington was never severely wounded in battle. Many people believe we would have lost the war without George Washington.

Even though Washington was used to commanding a small militia, he had an excellent strategy. His first move was to occupy Dorchester Heights where he brought supplies from Fort Ticonderoga and forced the British to evacuate Boston. Throughout the war for Independence, Washington continued to use his excellent strategies. His strategies he used on the Hessians in Trenton was the surprise attack. Most of the battles he fought, he planned out very well. He failed sometimes but that didn’t stop him from fighting. Washington was well organized, paid attention to details, and required hard work and effort from his troops. During every war Washington would visit his home ten times, he stayed in Valley Forge. During the wars he would also write letters to help his army by giving cattle to his army to feed them. Then, The Treaty of Paris ended the war for Independence and started The Revolutionary War.June of 1775, Congress ordered General Washington to lead the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. During the Revolution Washington suffered more lost battles than he won.

June 1755, George Washington Became Commander in Chief but to many patriots he was much more than the Commander in Chief. He became the calm voice to those who needed it, George Washington was known to be strongly determined and held a heavy load of the patriotic duty to country. George Washington was the real backbone into the Revolution war and kept it from going under during the hardships and unexpected trials and tribulations that occurred during the long years of war. The Continental Army’s choice of George Washington as their leader of the continental army was critical in ensuring the United States’ victory. While many in the colonies wanted freedom from Britain that was not the case for everyone. Individuals’ motives were largely location dependant. The Battle of Saratoga proved to be pivotal in ensuring the United States’ victory against British forces.

When he did join he quickly rose ranks as he was elected commander-in-chief but this was largely the fact that he was popular in Virginia. Although George Washington had no formal large battle training and lost more battles than he had won The battles he did win were major and played a key role in the outcome of the war. As an example I will use the battle of Yorktown, this battle took place on september 28th 1781 George Washington ordered the aiding french fleet to attack Yorktown by sea while the continental army attacked via land. This battle was also the deciding battle in the revolutionary war and the future country known as the U.S.A. was victorious. At the age of 23 years old Washington would become commander of the Virginia Regiment, ( Ellis, Joseph J, His Excellency, 24) although his men both more experienced and senior sought after him as their leader. His character and patriotism led directly to his selection as Commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Army. As commander-in-chief George led his army to a number of very important victories to include the capture of Boston with few defeats such as the trouncing of New York City. George lost many battles, with only one surrender, he continuously and persistently fought the British with unrelenting tactics he conspired the general strategy of the war. He oversaw the training and the organization of the army. Being unanimously elected upon Washington began his first term as President in 1789. He went on to serve for a second term ending his presidency in 1796. All that being said George Washington sounds like a stand up guy and that is why many Americans consider him to be a hero, but there are limits to the stories that are told.

In 1775, during the summer time, the Continental Congress was convinced by John Adams to create an army that is a unified continental. Adams then convinced the Continental Congress to make George Washington, whom was a Virginian Colonel, a general. Washington's overall demeanor, characteristics, actions and many other forms of his altogether way he was, essentially helped Americans become victorious. Not only was Washington a great leader, he also was very fierce and held many military defeats. Washington was able to obtain the knowledge to understand that the Americans needed to fight a defensive war in order to see victory amongst themselves. This knowledge aso allowed him to be aware of how to dodge the direct obstacle of the more mighty armies within Britain

After the American Revolutionary War was finished, a new leader was needed to run the United States of America. The colonists of New England had just won their independence from the monarchy of Great Britain, who had not represented the colonists in a way the colonists deemed fair. The leader of the Continental Army, George Washington, was inaugurated in 1789. By following the outline of the presidency that the Constitution described, setting different traditions, and helping to create a stronger government, George Washington helped shape the office of the Presidency and helped shape early American government.

George Washington was born February 22, 1732. He was elected as the first president by the Electoral College unanimously in 1789. Washington is commonly called the "Father of his country" since he played a major role in fighting for independence and helped form the government we now have. Many of his leadership practices became the template for the way politics have proceeded following his terms. For example his use of a group of counselors known as a "cabinet" is still in practice today. He only served for two terms and then stepped down which became, for the most part, the accepted norm for future presidents. George Washington 's strong, courageous, intelligent leadership was important because it brought the victory of the American patriots over the British in the Revolutionary War. George Washington and his leadership skills made this a great place. He paved the way for American Generals. George Washington was a great man who also lead us to victory. He also gave up lots of things to be general and president.
