The article “Here’s a Terrible Idea: Robot Cars with Adjustable Ethics Settings,” presents a very interesting dilemma I had not considered before. In theory, it makes sense that an intelligent vehicle could have the capability to determine who and where to wreck should the decision be needed. Unfortunately, the ethical robot car idea is problematic, and comes with numerous moral issues. There is a tremendous amount of liability on car manufacturers if they were to design this ethical car. If the manufacturer sets a pre-determined ethical setting of the vehicle, they could be held responsible for when there is a wreck; the hurt party could argue that the ethical setting set in the car caused it to wreck into him or her, making it the manufacturers fault, or perhaps even murder. Does the driver set it to protect himself or herself above all else, or should the driver set it to save the maximum amount of people? An egoist will clearly adjust it to protect himself, while a utilitarian will adjust it to protect the maximum amount of people. Logically, everyone else will adjust the setting to be somewhere in the middle of the two, however I do not think that will always be the case. I think that most people will have the setting to protect themselves before all others, not because they are egoists, but because humans are inherently selfish, and it is a base instinct to protect ourselves first. If I’m being honest, I can’t say for certain that I won’t adjust the setting to protect myself above all others. If I had this choice right now, I think I would probably set it to about the middle, however if my girlfriend or any kids are in the car with me, I would consider changing the setting to protect my car the
