“Just follow the rubric and you will do very well during your high school English experience each,” teacher stated. Teachers handed out a rubric at the beginning of each assignment, which detail every single thing that needed to be included in your paper. As long and you followed all of the instruction stated in the rubric, your paper would qualify you to receive an A. At the time, I thought this method was rather effective. I thought I was a stronger writer as result of being able to follow the instruction from the rubric and always receiving an A on each assignment. I never received anything lower than a 93% in any of my high school English classes. Therefore, I transitioned from high school English to college English with the idea …show more content…
Our senior project had to be completed and pass in order to graduate. Senior project consisted of volunteer hours, having a mentor, an 8-12-page paper, and a presentation of your project to your fellow peers and a board of judges. This was the most challenging English paper that I have ever had to write. This was the first time that I actually had to sit down, look up references, reliable resources, scholarly sources, and had to show the opposing argument. The most challenging part for me was trying to show the opposing argument while keeping the integrity of my stance. Finding sources that where scholarly and reliable was challenging. This was hard because before this paper all I had to do was to google my topics and any article that was relevant to my topic. This was truly one of my hardest papers and presentations I had to do before coming to college. Therefore, high school English did give me what I needed to be a strong college …show more content…
This was my favorite writing assignment, because it was a fun topic. In this essay, we were allowed to analysis a text for its rhetorical appeals. I chose to write about a song. I chose this because to me music is universal, music can change your mood, and music can change your perspective. Ethos, logos and pathos where the big three in this paper and when writing the paper, you had to show how the writer builds these rhetorical appeals. I chose the song What I Love About The South by Rodney Atkins. Before writing this time I wanted to make sure I had a firm understanding of what I needed to write about, so I read the book about the three things that make a good rhetorical triangle, asked question and worked really hard on all of the in class activities. Ethos is the use of persuasive language that appeals to the character of the reader/listener. Pathos is the use of language to appeal to the reader/listener emotionally in terms of beliefs. Logos is the use of language to appeal to the reader/listener on a logical level. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos all made me immediately thing of the song What I Love About The South. While writing this paper the first time, I just knew that I had an “A” paper. I felt I had a great understanding of a rhetorical analysis. I wrote about how Rodney builds his rhetorical appeal. I noted within the paper where you could find ethos “Grew up down here
The challenging component this semester was the transition from high school English reading and writing level to college level. It is mainly because High school writing did not have many expectations from students, its main focus was on the ideal five-paragraph essays. As compared to college, writing is mainly geared and focused on one’s ability to thoroughly answer the assigned prompt. Initially, I was not sure if I was capable of handling a fast-paced course, however, I quickly adjusted to the change and I am glad that I chose to stay. In English 10, I have learned many valuable elements that I can incorporate into my everyday writing. I have included my writing from project 2 a rhetorical analysis on, “Black Lives Matter”, which effectively demonstrates my growth as a reader, thinker, and writer.
Rhetorical appeals are the basis of an essay if you either want to get your point across, or you want to persuade someone to be on your side of the argument. Using all three appeals to work together give the essay a perfect way to show the audience that your side is what they should choose. Ethos gives the credibility of the writer, pathos gives emotions to
This semester I wrote two major papers in English class, the first was a text analysis about the novella Anthem, and the second an argument paper about a subject that each student was free to choose. The textual analysis essay asked me to explain exactly what Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem believed and communicated with her novel and how these beliefs were shaped by her childhood. Each paper also included a summary of the text and cited some arguments from individuals who were against Rand’s beliefs. The argument paper required that I pick something they felt passionate about and argue for or against it, with detailed reasons, strong support from experts, and a place to recognize and refute people who felt differently. These essays were used
Coming into junior year and taking an AP English class, I am extremely nervous. Outside of English, I am taking two other AP classes, so I am worried about the work load that I will be responsible for throughout the year. I have heard from my older sister that AP English is a fun, great class. Throughout my eleven years of school, I have always been one to challenge myself and I fell that by taking AP English I will be challenging myself once again. I am looking forward to a good year this year.
Royalton High School follows a 7 period day schedule, 50 minutes class periods, typically 5 days a week beginning at 8:15am and ending at 3:22pm. A regularly scheduled day consists of seven four minute passing periods and a 15 minute homeroom at the end of the day. Homeroom is not considered as a scheduled class, and even though it is not required, it is still beneficial to many students. The sole purpose of homeroom is to inform students of extracurricular activities, scholarships and college visits, the announcements, and reduce class absences.
In this class, we have so far learned about rhetoric, rhetorical analysis, and writing strategies. We learned how to find ethos, pathos, and logos within an article to find out how the author wanted to appeal to their audience. We also learned different reading and writing strategies that the author utilizes when they use ethos, pathos, and logos.
In the words of Samuel Adams, “It does not take a majority to prevail but rather a tireless, irate minority, keen to set brush fires in the people’s minds.” I do agree to the statement that it takes a minority to make the people realize what changes must be brought but I do not confirm to the views that it does not take a majority to prevail. According to me most process to start changes are started by a small group of people but if the group does not enjoy the support of the majority, the revolution is doomed for failure. In my opinion, it is not feasible for a minority to go against the wishes of the larger group and bring a
One thing that I notice in my first project is that I was very repetitive all throughout. I kept saying the same thing over and over in different words, which did not add anything to my argument. Instead, it filled my essay with empty paragraphs that I had to get rid of when writing the final draft. I believe that I have improved on that because I did not notice this problem in my other projects.
It's funny how we have been in the same schools from elementary to high school, but it wasn't until high school when we first started talking to each other and really became friends... Or in my case became "fake friends" during our first two years of high school, that is. Crossly were hesitant to be friends in the begging but manage to continue our friendship through out high school. Anyhow, crazy how things came to be in the end, as close we have gotten and how helpful you been on bringing the best of me in school, especially when we had english class together back in freshman year in high school, believe me, if I wouldn't have chosen english nine and ten honors with you I wouldn't been as proud on my improvement in better developing my english
congratulations! my school is going pretty well. Unfortunately, I have been busy with school and work as well, but the more I work and the more I go to school, my English is getting better and as I said before I am taking an English class. it makes my English better. end of the semester, I am going to take assignment tests in order to pass on English 120. I think it will help me
There are many reasons why I believe I am an excellent candidate for English 9 Honors. Some of these ways include, I have enjoyed reading and writing from a young age. I am a hard worker and never give up until I get the job done. I am very eager to learn, create and put forth my best work.
Advanced Placement classes were something that I have considered and that I continue to consider. A challenge and a college credit is why I would like to take this AP English course. In addition, I would like to take this AP class to ameliorate my weaknesses in grammar and vocabulary. I believe that this class could also benefit in my career, learning harder vocabulary so I can sound more intelligent when I speak. However, considering how nerve racking it is for me to be joining an AP class since the workload maybe overkill, I wish for this class to build up important writing skills.
This paper was designed to gives us a small insight into what college writing would be like while still giving us the freedom to find an interesting topic that pertained to both the writer and the reader/class. What this research paper did was make me view writing in a different way, because contrary to the smaller 3 page papers I was used to knocking out in 45 minutes, I was forced to sit down and try to understand the several different research sources I had found. I also had to go more in depth with what I was writing and formulate my sentences to try and explain and help the reader understand what I was trying to say about my topic while still trying to open the reader up to my point of view. All while writing this paper our teacher was also giving back mass amounts of constructive criticism at a college level to help improve our writing skills. This research paper help expand how I viewed writing essays past that of regular required 5 body paragraph essays that can be done in 45 minutes of one English
