The Industrial Revolution: More Harm Than Good?
The Industrial Revolution in England sparked a change in the world that would last for many years to come. People became more enlightened and thought of things that have never been done before. For instance, they created a new way to make steel that made it a lot stronger called the Bessemer Method. The Industrial Revolution also showed a movement of Urbanization, which means to shift from rural areas and go into cities. Instead of working on farms the men and even women would work in hazardous factories for many hours a day. The lifespan expectancy was very low for these factory workers and the sanitation throughout the streets caused many diseases. There was even trash and feces throughout

There are a few positives with the working conditions and the wages in the cities throughout England. The average shift was 14 hours a day for 6 days a week, this is a positive because people could make a decent amount of cash by putting in this many hours a week. Another positive with working in the factories is that everyone had a specific role in their job, so they knew how to do it very well, this would allow better production. Child Labor was one of the most controversial topics throughout this period that we are in. It is a very good way for families that need the money to be able to get it. It also helped out the production because the smaller children could be able to fit into small places that the adults could not fit into. As a result from child labor they made education for children mandatory throughout the entire country and other industrial nations. The changing role of women started to break down the gender barrier. It allowed women and men to work in the same place, not just the men working in the factories and women cooking and cleaning. They were also easier to hire because they made a lot less money so they could hire more of them or just save money. Urbanization had many positives effects on the cities and the countries as a whole. It allowed citizens to unite together in all of the big cities, which allowed for the factories to get workers since they needed …show more content…
The working conditions were so horrible most people got severely injured and deformed. Sometimes they would even get killed from one of the machine parts. The machines exploded and malfunctioned all of the time normally killing people. The factories were not well lit or cleaned so it was such an easy place to get a disease from. They had an average life expectancy of 10 years less than an average person. The wages were awful too, the men on average made 10-15 shillings a week, the women on average made 5 shilling a week, and the children made 1 shilling a week. 1 pound of tea is 6 shillings and rent it 5 shillings a month to put the perspective of how much they made in place. Child labor was one of the most awful sins in this revolution. They were sent to the factories to help pay for their families expenses and were put through some really bad conditions. They were paid 10 percent of the wages that the men got. They got very sick and sometimes they go deformities because of their weaker build. Having women working caused many issues throughout the country. They were paid between 1/2 and 1/3 of men wages because they got through their weaknesses of that they needed the money to support their families. Their long skirts and hair got caught in the machines, which severely ripped of their hair and destroyed their clothes, or they get killed. The overall
The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700’s. The Industrial Revolution was a time of new inventions, products, and methods of work. The results of the Industrial Revolution led to many short and long-term positive and negative effects. These results have been assessed from many viewpoints such as the factory workers, the factory owners, the government, and other people who observed the conditions in industrial cities.
However the industrial revolution was not all good. The working class had no other option but to turn up at the factories for work. The factory system resulted in over-crowding and unhygienic conditions and also the development of slum areas. Many factory owners who needed cheap, unskilled labour, profited greatly by using children and women to run the machines and because they were small and could fit in tunnels as well not only that they were more suited for factory life because they could adopt more quickly and easily than men. By the age of 6, many children were already working twelve hours a day in factories. These children had no free time to do anything plus they earned low wages. Hardly any of the children went to school they had to work in factories to earn money. Quite a lot of the people who worked at factories got sick and died because of the toxic fumes in the factories. While others were severely injured because the machines didn't have safety guards so many children got killed by machinery when they fell asleep and got caught up in the machines. Many of the children who were orphans, hired by the employers would
On the other hand, because of the establishment of factories by businessmen, the workers ' lives became hard as they faced unfair working conditions in dirty and small working places. They worked long hours with no break. The machines used in factories were also very dangerous and led to workers enduring injuries. Unskilled labor did not even require training. During the Industrial Revolution, child labor became common since it was cheaper to have children working. Instead of earning an education, children started working as early as 8 years old. Also, factories produced pollution within the cities because of all the coal that was being used for power, leading smoke to contaminate the air. People became sick and even
At the time living conditions during the Industrial Revolution were poor. In Manchester the houses are overcrowded (Document 2). Most people lacked beds, food, clothing and more (Document 7). Most people spent 12-14 hours in a factory working with little to none breaks, enclosed rooms that are polluted, and not good pay. (Document 7). This
The Industrial Revolution was a positive time in history. Throughout this time period because or three main reasons innovation; they invented many things we use today and things that changed how we lived. Second, the growth in population this incorporated for families to make more money and companies to rise up. Finally, the revolution made the standard of life so much better. People were able to travel and live in comfort
Although the Industrial Revolution had many good things about it, it has more negative things than positive. The Industrial Revolution has more negative than positive. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of medical advances it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were pollution a danger to environments, harsh working hours, and child labor.
Because of the better diets people generally wear healthier and stronger and lived longer lives. While the industrial revolution had many positive impacts on our history, there were many negative effects that arguably outweighed the positive. Although there were a lot of positives, the Industrial Revolution brought many negative impacts. One negative impact was that since the factory workers were hired at such a young age and work very long hours their bones got used to such hard manual labor (doc. 1).
The Industrial Revolution started in the mid-1700s and rapidly spread industrialization to most of Europe. Because of the revolution, the iron production in Great Britain had increased by 518 times. Despite the positive outcomes of the factories, factory workers were exposed to dangerous conditions, including unprotected machines, which led to many unintended injuries and even death. Moreover, the factories took time away from school, leaving the workers without higher level knowledge and skills. The Industrial Revolution increased the overall standard of living of the lower class, however the poor working conditions and hindered education negated the gain of working in the factories.
The Industrial Revolution had many long-lasting effects on the English economy and society in the 1800s; the effects being both positive and negative. England’s industrialization resulted in urbanization, improved production, and better transportation, but also in poor living and working conditions for the working class, including many children. Industrialization in England made production of goods much more convenient, creating a greater demand for unskilled labor and a rapidly growing population. The population increase meant that more food was needed in order to feed everyone. In Document 5, Michael Mandelbaum explains that some rural labor was made “redundant,” causing many people to move to urban cities where they could find work in the new factories.
As time progressed society in England changed but the biggest change was caused by the industrial revolution. Society did change for the better but had many bad side effect along with it. A good thing that came from the industrial revolution was the upgrade of tools. With the Industrial revolution came many great inventions that people today rely heavily on. Inventions such as cars, planes, and tools. These changes also helped with the progression of house building, making it easier for people to design and build sturdy homes that can withstand nature. This helped us get to where we are today with all the technological advancements. But this all came at a cost. Along with the factories producing this we had people working there. These people were treated very badly with their work environment and pay. There was no minimum wage back then making it hard for people to continue living. And if u didnt die from starvation or overworking you would die from how dangerous the factories are. All day breathing in smoke and having the risk of getting stuck in a machine. And even if u did survive getting injured you would surely die of infection because they can pay for health care on how low their salary. These changes impacted in world we know today in both positive and
Mortality rates were decreasing rapidly. This was not only an effect of the poor living conditions, but also of the high pollution that was being created by the factories. Without the proper piping that is needed, the streets which were already filled with trash, also became smoggy and polluted. Women and child labor were very common in the industrial revolution with employees working from twelve to sixteen hours a day and being paid scarcely enough to get by.
Working conditions were horrible and had very low wages. Child labor was common and the children could work in factories, mines, farms, and as newspaper sellers. The men that worked usually received $2 a day which was just enough to survive on. If children and women worked they would receive less
Anyone worked from childhood till elder years. You needed the money back then. So you would have to go and work in the factories which was terrible. The children could not go and get an education, they had to work hard in the factories. When you were older, you worked until They usually worked anywhere from 5-16 hours a day working, depending on your age. Children had to work in the shops if they were poor which was most of the population. They also worked when they were very old. Most of the worker’s lives were dedicated to working in the shops which was very boring and miserable for them.
In England during the industrial revolution there was a lot of poverty and pollution, especially in the main towns where the mass unemployment and people often had to go into the work houses. The conditions that they were made to work in were overcrowded. There was no sanitation or anywhere to clean, and there was a large amount of pollution. These all led to diseases among the workers. Some of the jobs that the children were made to do were chimney sweeping or selling matches. Adults had to do bone crushing for fertilisers, working in kitchens and doing the laundry for rich people.
The roles available required long hours and supplied little pay. The poverty level became very excessive and each capable member of the family was required to work in order keep the family above deprivation. Families migrated from the rural farm areas to the newly industrialized, crowded towns on the lookout for work opportunities. in the course of this revolution, children became one of the groups that had been extensively affected due to the fact they were referred to as to workers within the factories. A family could no longer be capable of earning enough itself if the children weren 't employed. This caused the excessive rise of child labour in factories. Children worked long hours on their family’s farms when they were living in the rural areas but in the cities the children worked extensively hard for very long hours for larger companies
