Throughout this whole term we have learned numerous roles of the criminal justice profession. How on a macro level law enforcement has made points to serve and protect, all the way down to the micro level of society. Men and women risk their lives every day to make sure that the law is obeyed, and their community is still held together. In the following paper you will see how the criminal justice profession helps on an individual and societal level. But what does each level mean you may ask, well let’s break it down a little. Individual need is person to person with the law, where societal is in the community of the law enforcement. The first individual need are assaults in and around bars. "The proliferation of bars in many communities …show more content…
These people not knowingly could create conflict with each other. So how can this issue be fixed, there are a few ways that the criminal justice professional can do. For starters some cities have where the bouncers in bars have had some sort of law enforcement background, that way they will be able to handle any issue that may arise in a better manner than the big macho black shirt bouncer who is just for show. Also another way they can help is during closing time in the congested areas have more officers patrol the area. That way much of the conflict can be subsided. Our second individual need is how the criminal justice professional can stop people from shoplifting. How is shoplifting an individual need you may say, well for instance it someone in your community stole something from your local Walmart it would not affect the community, only affect the person who has committed the crime. How would someone spot a shoplifter, "Shoplift Prevention - Los Angeles Police Department," 2016, says that these are some things to look for: seems nervous, avoids eye contact, wanders around the store without buying anything, leaves the store and returns to your business repeatedly in a short period of time, stays in an area of your business where he or she is hard to see, and keeps watching you or is constantly looking
In this assignment I will be examining and investigating the effects of crime on individuals, communities and business and discussing the role of services that support victims of crime and witness. There are a lot of people and communities that are impacted negatively by crime. However in the public service, there are approaches used in order to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. This is done by using websites and wardens to keep track of recent crimes. Also I will be writing about how both public and third sector
The public has a fascination and obsession over crime and criminals, but people want to know how those crimes are dealt with in the criminal justice system, in court and on the streets. “Now that the penal system has forsworn the former, and confined the latter within prison walls, the public turns to the news media. Stories relating to criminal justice are never far from the front pages and from the collective consciousness” (Roberts 99). We as American citizens have no choice but to watch the news or read the daily newspaper and get the latest crime right across the headlines. Learning about the new political and economic burning topics of the day seem to be at the majority of peoples interest.
Criminal justice practitioners are necessary for a civilized society. Without those who form boundaries to our freedom, and the ones that reinforce those laws, our community would be chaos. Some of the main social issues our society faces are drug abuse, gang violence, child abuse, and terrorism. The criminal justice practitioners face these types of issues daily. These professionals must act on the morals and laws stated by society rather than their own opinions, sometimes facing hard decisions. The criminal justice field is always active and busy, dealing with countless amount of criminal activity throughout the country.
A criminal justice system has been in place since the dawn of time, from the hue and cry era of policing to the advancement of the system there have been many laws, models, and theories set into place to protect the citizens but also to provide law enforcement officers with power to carry out their duties. A communities interest in the criminal justice system is to prevent and stop crime with law enforcements assistance. This paper will provide an overlook of how concepts from the criminal justice system are applicable in everyday activities.
Within the Criminal Justice system, comes a structure of both practices as well as organizations that main role is to uphold not only social jurisdiction, but to discourage and diminish criminal activity. The Criminal Justice system also sanctions those who violate the laws of the land with penalties and reintegration of the criminals into society. In the United States, our policy has been guided by the 1967 President 's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice, which issued a ground-breaking report 'The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society ' (President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice [Presidents Commission], 1967).
News reports daily of all of the many different crimes that has taken place. In today’s society, we depend upon the justice system. Criminal Justice is a big deal. The Criminal Justice system was put in place by the agencies and established by the governments to help control the crimes and apply penalties to those that violate the law. Many people feel that the criminal justice system is there to protect and serve while others feel that the criminal justice system fails them daily.
As we all know – there are tons of social issues within the entire world that Criminal Justice Practitioners deal with, most likely, on a daily basis. One of the many social issues I’ve chosen is Prison Overcrowding.
Police, courts and corrections are part of criminal justice organizations. Each of these organizations face challenges every day and the leaders of these agencies must deal with these challenges (Duelin, 2010). The types of criminal justice leaders range from police chiefs and sheriffs to prison superintendents, and heads of government, state, or local task forces. Some of the challenges they confront are budget and staffing shortfalls, political perspectives on the roles of law enforcement personnel in society, and the changing nature of crime and the difficulties associated with keeping up with these trends (Bryant, 2010).
In every community there is an element of crime. During my time as a Law Enforcement Officer, I had a front row seat to see the intricate and often violent interactions between the two. There were still many aspects I did not have a full grasp on. During my time in this class, I gained a more complete understanding of how the judicial and incarceration process worked. In this paper I will discuss what I found enlightening about the course materials. I will also discuss the information I gain from the guest speakers. Lastly I will make my recommendations for the class in the future.
Outline and assess the role of the police in the social construction of crime (50 marks)
Society relies on the criminal justice system to maintain order within communities and to maintain a safe environment for community members. Society expects the criminal justice system to provide justice by separating the guilty from the innocent, to incapacitate dangerous individuals, to promote deterrence to law-breaking individuals, and to rehabilitate offenders. An important expectation of the criminal justice system is to provide fair and just consequences to criminal offenders and assist the offenders with reintegrating into society. Some of the expectations of the criminal justice system are not met
This weeks reading covered several areas first What is Criminal Justice, next The Crime Picture, and finally The Search for Causes. All three of these sections focused on crime and its impact in America. Setting the tone for the remainder of this course and building the initial foundation for the basic thought process and understanding in criminal justice. The first chapter What is Criminal Justice starts with crime in America and describes it as an ebb and flow as if coming in waves.
The criminal justice field is an ever evolving field. As today’s technology changes so does the way the criminal justice field interacts with that technology. As our society changes the technology that we use will also be altered to fit the situation. The barriers that come along can affect how the criminal justice field interprets what to do next. The basis of the criminal justice system is to protect and serve the community as a whole. Keeping up with the changes in society is a vital part of our
This summary is dedicated to the response to crime by the criminal justice system. The police are the first to respond to crime, and in many cases “society’s last line of defense”, (Bohm & Haley, 2011, p 8). The police seldom involve themselves in peccadilloes, that is, infractions committed by a person that can be handled by the family, school, or possibly the church. Should these infractions become misdemeanors or felonies, then inevitably there will be police involvement. Sometimes cases are easily solved, while others require further investigation. Investigation into some cases may take days, weeks, months, and even years. Once the suspect is arrested and charged with a crime(s), the next process will be the court system.
Criminal justice professionals are charged with upholding the peace and ensuring that laws set by federal, state, and local governments are being followed by citizens, and if not enforce penalties. Criminal justice professionals whether an officers or an official are held at a higher standard compared to most civilian occupations. Being that criminal justice professionals hold a tremendous responsibility they are
