In PEST analysis, we will look into what will be affect by the business environment. It includes political environment, economical environment, social environment and technological environment.
So let’s start with political environment. Political environment may mean some kind of regulation or legal issue made by the government. Fair-trade and minimum wage will be a good example. For IKEA, we can see any significant impact from the political environment.

Both of them are important to operate a business. The next one will be the process. The first process is the shop floor set up which is extremely important for IKEA. It can show the customers the advantage of the products and to let customer enjoy the process of buying furniture. Another process is the staff training. IKEA have to train the staff to have some professional skill and knowledge because the staffs are representing the company. Then, we can go to another action – outbound logistics. It means the good and service that IKEA provide. They provide the goods delivery service and installation service. This is important for customers because most customers do not know how to install the furniture. Sales and marketing is another primary action. For IKEA, it will be the TV advertisement, annual catalog, internet and the showroom with live demonstration. In fact, this marketing channel is the reason why IKEA is so successful in selling furniture. The last action is the service. They are now providing hotline service. They also have design consultant to help the customers. And disposal of old furniture is also a very important service.
There are four support activities. The first one is general administration. It means the company has to plan some strategy and identify the opportunities and threats. Our business idea is to offer a wide range of well-designed, functional, home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible can afford them.” IKEA needs to create products following this motto but have these products molded to the tastes and styles of the U.S. population. The prices must still be low but IKEA must force the message that even though the price is low that does not mean the quality of the product is poor. This message will be key for expansion in the U.S. to be a success. IKEA must maintain their shopping experience as that is a strong competitive advantage, and tweak their philosophy so it fits the American lifestyle. If they do this then they will have success in expansion.
