Identity is what makes a person who they are. It is a complex relationship between a person’s personality and their appearance. Personality can be broken down by how that person acts or feels. This aspect of identity can be impacted by mental health and disabilities. The appearance of a person can also be broken down by how a person looks and how they dress. Physical appearance can be impacted by genetics and outside influences; accidents, diseases, sickness, etc. With the combination of the two we have the third influence on a person’s identity, personal choice. Without one or the other the notion of personal choice would not be corrupted. How a person thinks and looks affects their life, which in turn, affects their personal choices. …show more content…
His mother’s physical and cultural identity impacted her personal decisions as she grew older. There is no accurate way to know what or why this was her personal choice. However, due to her living predicaments and the cultural influences around her, there is no denying that outside influence had some effect on her choices. As Eubanks grew up and had children of his own. He raised them in a household that talked openly about race and cultural identity (Eubanks 63). One of his children, Patrick, was fair skinned and had light brown hair. Eubanks explains that many people thought his son Patrick was adopted, some even insisting he was adopted (Eubanks 63). Yet, this did not impact his son who said after he found out about his DNA test results, “They don’t change the way I think of myself or the way I view the world” (Eubanks 63). Due to how Patrick was raised, he had a different view than Eubanks. Patrick was impacted very little by this because of how he was raised, and his cultural influences around him. Had he been raised differently, he might have thought otherwise or had a different view of his DNA test results. Since America has had exponential growth in multiracial children, the concept is race has become more complicated. As Eubanks wrote, “Racism is easy when only two races exist…Multiple and overlapping ethnicities (with none in the majority) make racism more difficult” (Eubanks 65). With this new-found generation and knowledge, it creates a new culture

The issue of personal identity is one of the most broadly treated problems in the philosophical community. “Who are we?” “Where do we come from?” “What makes us human?” are some of the inquiries that most people face during their lives. Consequently, because for the majority of people it is almost natural to ask themselves about the meaning of their own identity, it is understandable that most major philosophical figures have presented their own theories regarding this question (Olson). In the same manner, it is reasonable that there exist certain conflict between these ideas. One of the most negatively received theories of personal identity came from the mind of John Locke. Essentially, his theory equaled identity with a person’s
Identity, as a concept, is broad and difficult to define because of how personal it is. To me, identity is who you are, and how you see yourself as a person. Accordingly, some of the most important factors that contribute to one’s identity are your racial background and physical appearance. In society, these factors have a great influence on the understanding .
What is an identity? Some people claim you’re born with it, other says that your identity is molded throughout your lifetime. An identity is what makes you the person that you are. When someone describes you to someone else, they are describing your identity. The morals that you live by, and the way you live your life is your identity. Many different factors make your identity different from everyone else’s. I think this because everyone goes through different events in their life and that’s what alters a person’s identity.
Back in high school my group of friends and family members had the most effect on my sense of identity. Growing up I would always admire the way my oldest sister dressed. I would always want to go shopping with her so that she could pick my clothes out for me. She had her own unique style and it was very “chic” to me. As I begin to study her style when I became a teenager I created my own personal style similar to my sister but more suited for me in my own way. Physically in high school I was at a real bad place I wasn’t happy with my weight at all, which almost led to a depression. Emotionally I had to learn to emotionally self-regulate and socially I was pretty well off I was making some friends they just weren’t the friends I wanted to hang out with.
I am a student, with a meaningful background and identity. If I did not explain and share my story you would not understand who I am as a person, a student, an athlete, a friend, sibling, or a daughter. Just like any other student I qualify for many titles, but my titles are affected by my identity and background. I am a student diagnosed with a severe mental illness.
I am Sudanese by ethnicity and heritage, a Saudi Arabian by birth, and a Nebraskan by chance and fortune. I was born in Jeddah, a city in western Saudi Arabia. Within a few years, we moved to Sudan to be close to our relatives during what was then a difficult time for our family. However, my father remained due to work commitments, and we would yearly visit him during summer. In my parting of the red sea, as I traveled between Saudi Arabia and Sudan, my identity would toggle between an expatriate and a native.
There is much in the story that indicates the need for individuals to maintain connection with their political communities. Irving thinks that individuals who are not turned on to politics may have politics turn on them. Rip is out of step with his political community because he never actively identified himself as a member. I would call that man vs. environment. I think that there is a strong suggestion about how individuals lose a major part of their social and personal identities when they fail to acknowledge the political component of them. He also talks about values being lost when people are willing to sacrifice everything for material prosperity.
In fact, gender rules and traditional stereotypes are fading in recent society, people are starting to stand in individualism, confidence and rebellion as their main standpoint, they are likely to steer clear of conformity and refuse stereotypes that they deny to be in line with the traditionally defined masculinity and femininity J Maureen Henderson (2014).
One of the central issues of psychology is identity and the way individuals shape their identities for themselves. People live in different regions all around the globe and are consequently exposed to a distinct type of culture, religion, education, family values and media. These influences instill certain rigid values in people from birth, which configures their self-concept and the way they perceive other individuals in the society they interact with.
While thinking about “who I am”, I came across many different aspects: Gender, ethnicity, religion, race, and much more. On September 11th 1996, I was born a female (sex) to a middle aged single mother, Betty Scarborough, at U.T. Medical Center. To this day, my gender remains a woman. Although there are many different races, I was born into this world a Caucasian (White). When exploring the dating world, I would consider myself as a heterosexual individual because I only have attractions to males. So, when I was born and in todays time I would consider myself a female.
In the past, individual’s identities were often assigned to them by the hegemonic culture, largely based on their conceptualization of sameness. The hegemonic culture dominated identity discourse by drawing distinct boundaries between racial and cultural groups, separating and defining them. Modern discourse however, has seen individuals taking the power of assigning identity signifiers for themselves often in periods of great social change. While times of resistance are often the most easily recalled examples of this, subtle trends in society a tremendous impact, often without the conscience knowledge of the society. In the past two decades, Western Culture has been witness to a radical transformation in identification processes.
Personal identity is a challenging topic to understand, as there are numerous philosophers who have distinctive ways of defining identity. In this video the YouTuber is explaining five different philosophers and their description of personal identity. He is able to present the information in a manner that is easier to understand and relates it to people that I know. He begins his explanation of the material with Locke and states, “identity of persons is identity of consciousness.” Locke believes that memory is an essential component of identity. For example, if you recall yourself from a year ago, then you are still the same person you were a year ago. Reid’s version is similar to Locke’s interpretation, but is an expanded form. He describes
