Abstract

Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity in 2008, there were over 922 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 1.9% as compared to 2007. International tourism receipts grew to US$944 billion (euro 642 billion) in 2008, corresponding to an increase in real terms of 18%. This paper is purposed to explain about impact of tourism including advantages and disadvantages. This impact has occurred in some different countries.

1. Introduction

New revenues from tourism usually flows to the land owners and businessmen while the residents suffer from increasing cost of living. This might cause a mal-distribution of income. New employment opportunities attract people to migrate to the resort area, creating new social and cultural problems.

3. Socio-Cultural Impacts Social impacts can be thought of ‘as changes in the lives of people who live in destination communities, which are associated with tourist activity’ in regard to moral conduct, creative expressions. Cultural impacts can be thought of as the changes in the arts, traditional ceremonies, customs and rituals and architecture of people that result form tourism activity. Socially tourism has a great influence on the host societies. Tourism can be both a source of international amity, peace and understanding. Here are possible positive effects of tourism: • Developing positive attitudes towards each other • Learning about each other’s culture and customs • Reducing negative perceptions and stereotypes • Developing friendships • Developing pride, appreciation, understanding, respect, and tolerance for each other’s culture So, social contacts between tourists and local people may result in mutual appreciation, understanding, tolerance, awareness, learning, family bonding
