Kristin Howard To kill a mockingbird by Harper lee The power of Integrity Integrity is having a standard of morals and ethics, and living by them. It is a willingness and ability to do the right thing even when it is hard. The story To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with integrity. For example, many of the people in Maycomb share a prejudiced sense of integrity when it comes to its racist views. However, it is Atticus Finch’s integrity throughout the novel that really embodies the idea of moral and ethical principles. He puts into action every moral idea that he supports. Atticus is a role model to not only his children, but to the whole town of Maycomb, and his integrity is a great part of what makes him such a good example. Integrity …show more content…
Atticus and his children both had to deal with the adversity against them because of the communities differences in opinion. They kept their integrity through it all with Jem and scout having their father’s moral advice and support to help them. Though many succumb to the pressures put on us, there are also many Atticus’s out there that have a moral and ethical conscience backing them up. They become a role model that breeds integrity through their moral practices. “Before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience.” (Lee, pg.108) To conclude, Atticus is a strong moral figure in the book To Kill a Mockingbird that demonstrates the quality of integrity to the fullest. His integrity helps others to have integrity. To explain, Atticus instils a strong sense of integrity within his children by teaching them by example. Furthermore, his example of integrity also extends to the community of Maycomb, as Atticus forces them to reflect upon their prejudiced racial views. We ourselves are every day tested with our own integrity, and the Atticus’s of the world and in ourselves can help strengthen our moral values. All in all, Integrity within ourselves helps others to have
A moral that Scout should be living by, by now is you should hold in your anger. Again he set a moral for scout and Jem by taking the Tom Robinson case because he takes it because if he didn't he would feel bad and he couldn't just deny a person's chance to be free because of the color of their skin. Atticus went through with representing Tom Robinson knowing he would probably lose the case. This sets a moral value for Jem and Scout because I shows you should still try no matter what you think the outcome will be. I believe the biggest moral Atticus teaches Jem and Scout is to judge yourself before judging
Oprah Winfrey once said, “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not.” In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama, is the model of integrity. Atticus displayed his integrity by defending Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, and by always being polite to the people around him.
Having integrity is more challenging for one than one may think or imagine. Those who possess integrity are individuals who are essential to the many changes that have occurred over time in our world. The impact of someone with true integrity is important because not only can it create change for the better but it will also inspire others to act with integrity as well. An example of this is Nelson Mandela, a man who grew to fight the discrimination around him in South Africa sacrificing his freedom and putting his life at risk. His actions against racism have changed south Africa Forever and inspired others to think the same way which one can see from the amount of followers that he had around the world. To Kill A mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book about the Finch family, Scout, Jem and Atticus Finch, living in Maycomb. The characters are faced with a society of people who are prejudiced towards those who are different from themselves in one way or another. Throughout the course of this book integrity is crucial for the development of the characters and their actions against discrimination. The film The Power of One directed by John G. Avildsen is about a boy, Pk, who grows up in South Africa first living with his mother and after her death with a man named Doc. Pk becomes a symbol of hope to the kafirs as he begins to help them in the prison. Assuming his role in helping the kafirs, PK begins a life of proaction against the condescendence towards the native african
First, Atticus Finch is a genuine, moral literary character because he knows that you must understand a person and know them before you can judge them. "Scout," said Atticus, "when summer comes you'll have to keep your head about far worse things... it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down—well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down." (ch.11 pg.120) Atticus tries to explain to Scout the importance of understanding someone and getting to know the person before she does things. Atticus can take time to know a person, watching their actions, and seeing how they act. He then understands them and their position better than before, which can help him to better comprehend and
As Jem and Scout mature, Atticus teaches them the importance of adhering to one’s morals. He simultaneously exposes his children to evils, such as when they attend Tom Robinson’s case. Atticus teaches them to acknowledge the bad but never follow
George Rusu Mrs. Sanford English 1 Honors Period 5 30 July, 2014 Integrity and Innocence When the young and inexperienced are tasked with facing the reality behind what the real world demands of them, most succumb to the responsibilities associated with maturing. The strong willed, however, adapt to their surroundings to face this task. Jem Finch, from Harper Lee’s bildungsroman novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is a ten year old boy growing up in Maycomb, Alabama, a small and quaint town during the Great Depression. Throughout the entire tale, his moral integrity is challenged as he deals with a variety of issues ranging from the spite and fear surrounding a house in his neighborhood, to racism and hatred of others, and even preserving his family’s
In the long run, in the book, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is consistently doing his best to instill his children regarding life, what's right or wrong, and courage. Atticus influences not just his children, but everyone around him. He has worked very hard to set an example to his children. Atticus Finch has a colossal impact not just his children, but on everyone around
Atticus raised his children with firm beliefs in acceptance and the ability to get along with everyone. His philosophies have turned into morals not only for Scout and Jem, but for anyone who reads To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The teachings that are brought up in the book do not only apply to southern life in the 1930’s, but to daily life at any point in time. I strongly agree with the advice Atticus has given his children.
Atticus’ Role in To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus represents justice and morality. He plays a very important role in his children’s lives, teaching them reason, and raising them much different than those around them. He brings the lessons that he teaches his children to the courtroom, making sure people see both sides of the story, and keeping things fair. Atticus treated people fairly, even if it they didn’t deserve it. He was very conscious of what was morally right, and attempted to keep things as moral as possible.
Have you ever done something that was against your morals? You knew it was wrong, but you still went through with it. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch tries to teach his children and the town the value of morality. When Scout asks Atticus why he is defending Tom, he replies that if he didn’t defend him, he couldn’t hold his head up in town, he couldn’t represent this county in legislature, and he couldn’t even tell her or Jem not to do something. These reasons show that Atticus has good morals and is selfless because he is doing what he knows is right, not for his own convenience, but for everyone’s. It also shows that he is a wise and honest man.
Atticus has these qualities, he is the light in a dark world. He represents the good versus the evil in the town of Maycomb. When Atticus is talking to Jem about wanting an air rifle Atticus says, “ I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but i know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit'em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (99) As a parent, Atticus expects a lot from his children and treats them as his equals.
Throughout Harper Lee’s novel of To Kill a Mockingbird, one significant theme makes its presence known to the audience in order to explore a topic that has been the center of controversy for many years. From the very beginning, it is clear to see the message of integrity and justice that Lee so brilliantly contrived; which she conveys through setting, conflict, symbolism, and characterization. These cohesive factors work together in order to help the reader comprehend the author’s ideals and the moral dilemma she wished to shed light on at the time.
Atticus has a strong sense of morality and justice. One of his main aims is to install these virtues into Scout and Jem. He initially does what is right and sets an example for his children to do the same. This can be seen when Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson. Even though Atticus knows he cannot win the case, he takes it anyway because it is the right thing to do.
Through his actions and words, Atticus shows his children that they should not judge people according
As a single parent he had to teach Scout and her brother a lot. The two major lessons that they learned were “It's a sin to kill a Mockingbird” and “you should put yourself in others shoes”. The meaning of “It's a sin to kill a Mockingbird” is that this type of bird is helpless and can't defend itself. It also shouldn't be harmed because they don't do anything wrong. The meaning of “you should put yourself in others shoes” is that you shouldn't only think about yourself. You should think about other people and how we feel in the situation. These two lessons are based off of Atticus’s knowledge towards Tom Robinson and Boo
