Many kids in school are wanting to learn a new language away from their native language but many students are wondering what language is going to help them the most in the future. English is the clear answer for these students that are wondering what new language to learn for a number of reasons. Through different articles through the book “Language: A Reader for Writers” it discusses how language is the most successful and most useful language to speak. College students who want to learn a second language, that have not learned English, should learn English because it is the most widely used language in the world and it is the most useful language to learn.
There can be several different reasons why an English Language Learner can have troubles comprehending the English language. Poverty can play a huge role when in explaining why many English language learners have the troubles in mastering the English language. The State testing has varied throughout the years, along with the degrees of assessments and progress. Teachers also need constructive feedback to properly assess their own progress. The increase prescription of ADHD medication can also be a factor. Programs like SLADI in effect that pulls ELL’s from mainstream classrooms to focus on advanced grammatical structures of the English language; all in which, have been unsuccessful in aiding the student to acquire mastery within the English language domains of reading and writing. Comparing a personal experience I had dealt with wasted school year time, regarding an ELL student, involves a teacher being out of touch with her student and giving inappropriate leveled work. All of these issues work hand in hand. The ultimate goal is to teach literacy and to reach proficiency within the English language.

Summary: In the essay, The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society” written by Jonathan Kozol, and published in Readings for Writers in 2013, Mr. Kozol is raising awareness to the literate society about the danger our people are heading towards with the lack of literacy in our country. Kozol used a few strong points to prove his point. First, the voters of our country; how they cast their vote on the candidate that attracts their eye the most. Some literacy issues are becoming more and more prevalent in recent times. In the day and age we live in; we have access to the newest data and notions regarding literacy in the current education
The following essay looks into Appalachian population literacy crisis. The literacy crisis in Appalachian starts in home and schools, and the students were drop out school instead of graduation. Firstly, let us look at the literacy conflict between home and school. According to Baghban, the nature of conflict between home and school was that educators’ attitudes toward low test scores and parents did not see education as path of success. As reader can see, the conflict between home and school affects children success in school and literacy skills. Furthermore, the Appalachian population has gap between students’ home and academic lives, and Baghban propose a strategy that would bridge the gap between students’ home and academic lives. Overtime students could see the that print has meaning, and as results the students has higher chance to comprehend the text.
The lack of knowledge deprives many individuals, from the essence of a better quality of life. “The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society”, written by Jonathan Kozol, who is an American writer and educator; discusses the negative effects that society has brought upon illiterate people. Unfortunately, the majority of illiterate individuals suffer from poverty, and are raised in households where their parents could not read or write. In this case, they are subjected to grow in an environment that is deficient of educational skills. The terrible outcome of this, is that the cycle of illiteracy continues to pass on from generation to generation.
By improving literacy, society should provide all the students with a chance to succeed and support them to stay in school, so as to encourage skill development. No Students fall through the cracks in the education system.
The importance of literacy is quite big than what you can imagine, without it how can one be self-efficient. Whether you’re a child, adolescent, or an elderly it’s an essential for life duties. Literacy is an everyday component without it will be difficult to do things one requires. One of the main issues is poverty, this is stopping education for young kids or adults. Poverty has stumped the growth of knowledge for the people that have to deal with those daily issues.
The data collected from the students’ assessment showed they had a high level of comprehension in using the essential literacy strategy which has been the focus of the learning segment. The assessment is directly related to what the students have been learning throughout the learning segment. The students d had multiple opportunities to practice the essential literacy strategy throughout the learning segment. The first section of the assessment which was the matching of the text features with their purposes was directly related to the learning task they had to perform in the lesson one relating to the learning target “I can match text features to their purposes.” The written response section was directly related to the related skill the students’
The development of literacy has taken a number of years. The effort to explain how people have improved on their education using universal formulas has become useless. The growth of literacy is similar to designing a car. Many people with distinct elements are involved, and some of the factors might or might not be done in our control. There is no clear process of improving a person’s education. Therefore, it requires the efforts of those who are specialised in different phases of this development. There are those who help learners perform well in the lower levels while others offer their expertise in later stages of education. In addition to this, if all the people play their roles in the best possible ways and be able to learn from other
As a student educator, it is important to teach my future students to be literate and to be literate myself. My goal of development of reading, writing, speaking and listening in my future classrooms will be possible through completion
