“Lamb to the Slaughter”, by Roald Dahl, tells about Mary and Patrick Maloney. The story takes place in the Maloney household during the 1950s. As Patrick returns home from his job as a police officer, Mary is ready to prepare dinner for herself and Patrick. Beforehand, Patrick explains he needs to talk to her imperatively. He confesses that he is in love with another woman and is divorcing Mary for her. Mary, expecting her first child with him, is extremely disheartened by this news. Nonetheless, she continues to make dinner for herself and Patrick. When Mary is preparing a frozen leg of lamb for dinner, he tells her that he is leaving and does not want dinner. Mary, extremely upset by this matter, walks over to him with the leg and impulsively hits him with it! Mary, shocked by what she had just did, suddenly worries about if her husband is still alive. After Mary checks and confirms that Patrick is dead, she calls and cancels her dinner friends with her friend Molly and formulates a plan about how to cover up the murder. She decides to go out to the store and buy vegetables, and come back and act shocked that he is dead, and claim that there must have been an intruder to the police. After Mary denies their speculations, they retreat into the kitchen. While inspecting the lamb leg still in the oven, Mary sees them and decides to serve them a warm meal of the lamb for dinner. The police eat the lamb happily, while Mary observes as she was not hungry. As she watches, she can’t avoid giggling, as she has not been framed for the murder and did not have to divorce Patrick. All the while, the weapon was “right under their noses”, as speculated by an officer himself. In the end, the police never figure out that Mary was the true committer of the crime and only used the lamb
