Managers perform many functions and play many roles. They are responsible for handling many situations and these situations are usually different from one another. Performance appraisal is important to any organisation as this is the optimum way of achieving goals and set objectives by the business. The organisation will have constant supervision of employees and how they are performing, this creates a relationship which can have a positive influence rather than a negative one as the employees will see firsthand what they are doing wrong and will strive to improve. In the article When the Problem is Management, author Lawrence Sawyer takes a look at the different styles that managers have in their practice, how they can better perform their functions and how they relate to the four basic functions of management. As an internal auditor, Mr. Sawyer provides some insight to these managers in helping them and their departments make better use of the tools they have and points out what basic function they are violating. Managers use different style in different situations. Generally, we can see one style generally emerges as the predominant mode of interaction. Autocratic manager makes independent decisions without much input from subordinates. The manager clearly dictates what, how, when and where things for the employees there is no room for employee initiatives. An autocratic style is least effective and desirable for motivating employees. Another management style is the bureaucratic management style in which the manager follows the rule and ensures that the employees follow the rules "as well ". They go by the book and the rules and enforced strictly. In this, the employees enjoy less freedom. No exceptions permitted.
Both the team leader and the team members have very important roles in ensuring the effectiveness of the team. These teams, while carefully built and very effective in what they do, require constant leadership attention. This perhaps is the most important issue that could affect a high performing team. A weak leader, who is unable to set good examples or enforce good behavior and or performance accountability, could ultimately result in a broad range of team performance issues. A high performing team requires a leader who communicates clear visions and goals, motivates team members, and capitalizes on each individual’s strengths. However leading a project team comes with its own issues.
