In the United States today, there are over fifty-one million disabled adults and children. Throughout our nation’s history, we have not allowed the best treatment and care for these numerous citizens. But, in the recent past, the government has passed laws, made exceptions, and thoroughly tried to provide accommodations to these people with special needs. While this is true, America, as a whole, still views this group as strange or different. Even though this is exceptionally normal, it is not correct. The United States needs to be opened up to the truth about their fellow American citizens. The people of America ought to understand that these disabilities affect not only those who are disabled, but that it affects the family and friends

Unlike other disorders an individual may have, there is no quick way and easy way to confirm or deny a learning disability. There is no x-ray, blood tests, easy and quick surveys to help educators determine whether a learning disability exists. Many of the problems with identifying and assisting children with learning disabilities are to have knowledge of the various learning disabilities and how they affect students. The lack of information available to parents and teachers causes the students to continue to struggle in school and diagnosis for any disabilities to be postponed even further in their schooling.

Under IDEA (2004), Disproportionality continues to exist in several categories listed, especially the categories of the Specific Learning Disability (SLD), Emotional Disturbance (ED), and Intellectual Disability (ID) ,(Gamm, 2007). Disproportionality is defined as the “overrepresentation” and “under-representation” of a particular population or demographic group in special or gifted education programs relative to the presence of this group in the overall student population (National Association for Bilingual Education, 2002). So many factors are responsible for this disproportionality, but the key factors, as apparent from researchers are; (1) gender difference, (2) overrepresentation of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse CLD population, (3) unsuccessful teaching approaches, (4) poor classroom management skills, and (5) assessment policies and practices.
For the social justice project, my group chose to focus on college student with a learning disability. College students with a learning disability can sometimes be overlooked or not represented in the classroom setting that Beneful for them. My initial impression of a person that has a learning disability is having trouble retaining information that can be seen as simple to others. They need a little bit more help which can be tutoring, study method or extra time on assignment. After this project, I have a new respect for people with learning disability. They must do more in order to achieve a goal that comes easily to other. They never complain, nor they do give up on a task that could be difficult to them. The most interesting aspects of what I learned about learning disability through my individual interview is a new-found respect for my best friend.

When you think of overcoming challenges in life, think of a game of baseball. The pitcher throws a player a curve ball, but he doesn't know until the pitch is thrown. Just like you, you have no clue what challenge is coming your way next. Your life could be flawless, but at the last minute, just like a curve ball; it changes. The curve ball represents the challenge, I encounter every day of my life; learning how to manage with a learning disability. Attention Deficit Disorder "ADD."
In the article, “Learning Disabilities”, the main subject that is talked about are learning disabilities. Learning disabilities are problems that interfere with the brain processing, receiving, analyzing, and storing information. This type of disability can make it difficult for someone to learn as fast as someone else of the same age. There are many learning disabilities and students that have one disability, probably have another type of learning disability too. Some learning disabilities can hinder a person’s ability to focus and concentrate and can cause a person’s mind to wander off too much when in school or anywhere else. Some other learning disabilities can make it troublesome for someone to spell, read, write, or even solve math problems.
One of the most challenging experience I went thought was during all of my elementary school career I had a speech impediment. I went through seven years of speech therapy to correct my mispronunciation of the letters l, r, and t. The speech impediment caused me to be teased and be put down as possessing a learning disability. I did struggle with learning how to read and how to spelling words, because I would sound out the word wrong. Today I see it as a learning experiences because I never look at someone with disabilities as being stupid or unable to do something. If I was to ever do that it would be looking down on myself because I still have moments where I cannot say a word correctly or it affects my spelling or reading. Having a speech
This week the reading was a review of Chapter five. I still believe it is true that it takes a village. It takes the village of the community as well as the educational village that works with students with intellectual disabilities every day.
Disabilities can only disable you as much as you let them. I wish I distinguished this when I learned I had learning disabilities. When I learned I had Dyslexia and a processing disorder I had the feeling a wall was put between me and everyone else. In the fourth grade a teacher kept being wrenching out of class on a regular basis. To see if I had a learning disability, they had me take an immeasurable test. Binders completely full of papers were being thrust at me. They told me to solve math problems, I had never gazed upon and read pages with words I could never dream of differentiating. These binders gave me the ultimate frustration. I was disgruntled. I did not know how to get the correct answer.
Tiffany, a cheerful and hardworking year two student, has recently been struggling with understanding the mathematical concept of time despite the teacher using resources such cardboard clocks. Previously the teacher has included resources to assist children during the lessons which has helped many students including Tiffany who has a specific mathematical learning disability. Tiffany is not the only student struggling as other members of the class are also unable to understand the concept of time.
