Prior to applying to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, I extensively researched the institution and spoke with past alums. From this I learned of the school’s goals of giving back to the community in addition to producing wonderful physicians. The wide range of facilities that your schools uses for internships provides a many unique experiences that arise from working in different communities and types of medical care facilities. I feel that diversity in learning is what makes an individual stronger; the more you see, the more you experience leading to a more well-rounded individual.

For this past week, I was an intern for Week 7 of the Harvard Medical School MEDscience Summer Program which offers a total of nine sessions of a week-long summer medical intensives for high school students. 13 students passionate about science, medicine, and healthcare come together from all over the country and even Canada to take advantage of the unique opportunities MEDscience offers. In general, there are very few medical programs in the country gear towards high school students whether it be because of age and education level, laws and hospital policy, or costs. Most of the medicine-related summer programs you can find for high school students are those in which you’d sit in a classroom all day and learn what you could have learned
I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Lewis Katz School of Medicine graduates humanistic physicians and emphasizes the caring of human beings. I believe that patient interaction is as a vital part of being a physician as medical knowledge.At Lewis Katz, each student belongs to one of the seven Doctoring colleges. Through the Doctoring colleges, I will start learning and practicing critical clinical skills as early as my first year. Being with the same group over the next two years, I will not only learn to work with others but also form meaningful relationships with faculty members. Lewis Katz is well known for its diversity and inclusion. Since its founding, it has been co-educational, graduating its first woman physicians as early as 1906. It trains its students to be culturally competent and ready to serve diverse patient populations. It also has a great connection with its surrounding communities. Located in North Philadelphia, Temple University Hospital (TUH) tries to meet the health needs of a vulnerable and economically stressed population, oftentimes providing low cost or even free medical care. While interning in the Children's Clinic, I had the incredible opportunity to go and visit the NICU. This program had also introduced me how to write a medical research paper. Mini med school gave me a lot of informative information everyday by health professions which they discussed about the ongoing medical issues and other problems like drug use and criminal issues our community is facing. I have also taken classes in High School such as Ap Biology, Ap chemistry, and AP Psychology that exposes me to everyday medical terminology that health professionals use. Information offered by these classes made it easier to communicate and understand doctors.I have taken every opportunity to better prepare myself to the challenges of the medical field. During the internship, I mainly focused on the nursing branch, I shadowed nurse practitioners and registered nurses in action and how they handled medical issues and was also given the opportunity to learn and ask about their challenges in nursing school and how they had overcome it. I was able to learn about the responsibilities and special skills required to be a nurse and received advices from the nurses on how to be successful in nursing school. I have also been self studying Human Physiology and Anatomy. Its the medical field that best describes me. I love to give back to my
I feel that my experiences and goals closely align with the UWSOM’s mission. During my shadowing internship with Northwestern Medicine, I found that nearly every medical specialty I observed peaked my interest, but I could most clearly envision myself thriving in primary care. I specifically enjoy family medicine and building lasting relationships with patients, as well as internal medicine and seeing a wide variety of cases on a daily basis.
In addition, this school has a nationally recognized research facility. My research experience has enabled me to think like a scientist. I plan to continue doing research in medical school. For health 490, I am seeking to get an internship that will help cultivate certain aspects of my personal, academic, and career development. When considering my personal development, what I strongly want to improve upon are skills such as leadership capabilities, public speaking, and health communication. Attending Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine’s would allow me to contribute to the mission of developing solutions to help residents of Washington. Whether it was developing innovative teaching methods in coaching or finding solutions to challenges faced in research, part of my personality is finding unique and innovative solutions to challenges I face. Through the school I would be able to work with rural medical offices and hospitals, in collaboration with the technology incubator, to develop technology that would make providing healthcare easier and more affordable.
Why do I want to become a part of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine’s Doctoral Diversity Program, you ask? As the son of a struggling single mother, I never would have imagined that I could become the first male in my family to attend a university, much less have the possibility of graduating with honors. This program would provide me with the tools I need to push my limits and achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a pediatric doctor. Why do I want to become a pediatric doctor so badly? To explain, I would have to start with my childhood.
In my opinion a successful student doctor should have organizational skills, be able to cope with the rigor and pace of instructing materials, most of all developed critical thinking during their time attending a medical program.
