According to Alan Bass, math is the building block upon which every science originates; which opens the doors to higher education and better income potential. However there are many high earners that never graduated college like Albert Einstein who states “everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”. Not everyone is good at math.

As a student starting off their schooling career there is a heavy focus on two subjects, that being Math and English. Within my elementary school career, I excelled in math and seemed to struggle with English as I was an ESL student. I struggled with English for years, but was able to learn Math very quickly. As a Mexican- American student, my family was not able to provide as much help with English as they were with Math. Regardless of any language barrier I could have had with teachers or my own parents, math was something I could grasp. I remember by third grade year, I had mastered multiplication tables and I was extremely proud of myself. However, by the time I began middle school I was already losing some of my strength in math.

I have found that college Math is much different than high school math. College math class meets less often and covers material at about twice the pace than a High School course does. You are expected to understand new material much more quickly. So it

Overcoming Math Anxiety by Sheila Tobias, 1995, lays out the groundwork for addressing math related stereotypes and understanding where peoples math anxiety has come from, why it continues, and most importantly, how to start working on overcoming it. A strong theme that continues throughout the book is the issue of gender differences in relation to math anxiety and why from Tobias’s findings and opinion is either true or false. However, the message throughout the book is clear. While math anxiety is a real issue that many suffer from, because of the everyday use of math and the benefits of being competent at using it, we are limiting ourselves by avoiding the subject like the plague and therefore must find ways to move past the anxiety.

I have always considered myself a mathematician; however, that did not keep this subject from being difficult. Math has a glorious way of growing you up. For me, it began in the first grade where I was introduced to the multiplication table; my instructor used to test us with mental exams and I remember enjoying it like I was playing a game and winning.

Math is all around us. Everywhere you go there is some sort of math involved consciously or subconsciously. Even though math is all around us, and everything we do involves math, I myself must say I dislike math. Research has shown there are many more people that dislike math compared to those who do like it. A survey done by a nonprofit organization named Change the Equation asked 1,000 middle school kids in 2010 whether they would prefer to eat broccoli or do one math problem, surprisingly more than half answered they would eat broccoli. Throughout the years, there have been many different strategies created on how to introduce and/or teach math to children.

You know that one kid you always had in class that asked the math teacher “Why are we learning this”? And the teacher's response was you will use math everyday in life. Math like other subjects are taught to prepare students for the future, and is considered crucial and important to our childrens learning.

Without taking math course by the reins, you came become ill prepared for college math courses. Insufficient math courses, plus the wrong courses, plus unmastered skills do not equal college readiness.

Math skills are necessary skills. Math is everywhere. Students need to learn basic math skills, at minimum, to be successful in life. After learning basic math skills, they should be exposed to and encouraged to learn more complex math skills. This will only increase their chances of success. “Mathematics are all around us. It is present in different forms whenever we pick up the phone, play games, manage our money, travel to some place, play sports, meet new friends; unintentionally in all these things mathematics are involved (Sumisha, 2012)”.

Prior to taking Pre – Calculus I had taken College Algebra which has helped me tremendously with the objectives of Pre – Calculus. I learned basic algebra skills that helped me advance in solving the objectives needed for the advancement of the course. I am currently working for a construction framing business in which some math skills are required. I plan on obtaining a major in structural engineering and a minor in mechanical.

All of us use math every day, whether we realize it or not. Teens use math when they pay money at ticket counter; doctors calculate the amount of medicine to give to patients; and even mom measures the amount of water she uses before cooking a cup of rice. Math is not a subject for the Elite, but a basic staple in our lives. It doesn't involve lots of reading; it is very straightforward – just understand the basic concepts and keep building on them until you find an answer.

Math, being one of the essential skills for the civil society to develop and progress, its importance does not require further explanation. As we become more technologically dependent, technical reasoning is needed for survival. Mathematics is no longer just a subject taken by the elite. Now it has rightfully become a staple in our educational systems even though many people do not appreciate it until it is needed. Throughout the course of MATH124, I have learned many skills and knowledge that helps me not only mathematically but also overall development.

knowledge in mathematics has useful as it makes life orderly.Calculations in mathematics are very functional and heavily impact on decisions made on a daily basis.Calculations together with mathematical patterns dictate a persons life.basic activities like making purchases,creating schedules,baking and even tipping to activities like building skyscrapers and space shuttles involve mathematics.Mathematics help quantify time and money which are the two main things that life revolves around.comprehension of basic mathematics results in ease of carrying out day to day activities.

When your parent is an ex-math teacher and you are terrible at their subject, you are doomed. My mother was a middle school math teacher when she lived in India. So, because of that, I have had math drilled into me from a young age and I resented it. Math never came to me easily. I would spend hours on a topic I did not understand because nothing got through my thick skull. Those hours consisted of my mom breathing down my neck and passive aggressively “yelling” at me to get the right answer.

Mathematics, like every creation of man, have evolved without really knowing how far you can get with them: the scope of the computer, physics, chemistry, algebra, all are evidence of this. Every aspect of our culture is based in some way or another in Mathematics: language, music, dance, art, sculpture, architecture, biology, daily life. All these areas of measurements and calculations are accurate. Even in nature, everything follows a precise pattern and a precise order: a flower, a shell, a butterfly, day and night, the seasons. All this makes mathematics essential for human life and they can not be limited only to a matter within the school curriculum; here lies the importance of teaching math in a pleasure, enjoyable and understandable way. Mathematics is an aid to the development of the child and should be seen as an aid to life and not as an obstacle in their lifes.
