My Math Autobiography Math is used in everyday life so I understand the importance of having that knowledge. I use it in my daily life, both professionally and personally, so I am very fluent with basic math. There have been some negative influences which have impacted my thoughts in taking college math; however I am confident I can relearn what I have forgotten. After taking the EdReady math assessment, a tutor will be necessary to help obtain a passing grade. My experience with math has always been positive. I received very good grades in math, algebra and geometry throughout high school. However, I am scared of college math because I haven’t applied it in over 25 years. Some of my responsibilities working in human resources are processing payroll/attendance and tuition reimbursement requests, both requiring basic math. Payroll processing is completed every two weeks in which we calculate regular hours and overtime hours for each pay period for accuracy. In addition, when an employee is separated from employment, we calculate their payouts of benefit time. Our tuition reimbursement program requires us to figure the percentages to reimburse staff along with informing them how much they can receive and/or when they reach their cap for the year. Math is also used in the calculation of regular hours worked in a 12 month period for determining eligibility for the Family Medical Leave Act. Another use of math in my profession is the calculation of hourly rates for annual raises, promotions, end of probation or longevity increases. Aside from my professional life, I use math in my personal life on a daily basis. Some examples would be balancing my checking and savings accounts, understanding retirement plans, measuring ingredients for recipes, measuring for home improvement projects and being able to count money when paying cash for an item. I am the treasurer of the Stark County Human Resource Association which requires me to pay bills and balance the checking account. Recreational activities such as family game night present opportunities to practice math. A lot of family games embody counting of dice and play money.
