While the two versions of the story have their own individual merits, the actual film works much better than the treatment in terms of pacing and tension. While the film moves past the exposition concisely, the treatment meanders around before getting into the heart of the story. The treatment unnecessarily attempts to flesh out the logistics of Ridley being asleep for 60 years by exploring the relationship with her now 70-year-old daughter, how she feels about being a sole survivor, and how she will survive in the new world with little money and a job she does not enjoy. While could have contributed to Ripley’s character development, the story is not about Ripley adapting to a new world; the story is about Ripley wiping out the Aliens, so ultimately the exploration of these concepts slow down the treatment too much.
The treatment also tries to give backstory to the terraforming colony, and more importantly Newt’s family, through the inclusion of a scene of Newt’s parents finding an Alien ship on an oil search. This scene damages the treatment’s tension. It’s worth noting that the film not only exceeds the treatment in terms of pacing and tension, but also in the believability of Ripley’s relationship to Newt. In the treatment, Ripley acts awkward at first around Newt, but slowly warms up to her. In the film, Ripley displays nurturing characteristics the moment she meets Newt, such as cleaning her face, until the end, when she tucks Newt into the sleeping pod. This scenario of the relationship works much better than Newt calling Ripley “Mommy” at the end, which feels forced and strange, simply because Ripley saved
